City Council District 9 Candidates Debate
Wednesday, May 9, 2012
College Rolando Library
6600 Montezuma Road
Meeting Starts at 7:00 p.m.
Debate: Approximately 7:15 to 8:00 p.m.
The public is invited!
Last year, San Diego City Council district boundaries were redrawn in accordance with the 2010 Census. As part of the transition to a strong mayor form of government, a ninth district was added. The College Area, formerly in District 7, is now in District 9. The northern border of the new district is Interstate 8, and includes the following community planning areas: College Area, part of the Eastern Area (Rolando and El Cerrito), Keninsgton-Talmadge, City Heights, and part of Southeastern San Diego (including the communities of Mt. Hope, Mountain View and Southcrest). The culturally-diverse district is just over 50% Latino, making it the City's second Latino-influence district (along with District 8). Click here to see a map of the new District 9.
About the Candidates ...

Mateo Camarillo, a Kensington resident, has been a local business owner (including several McDonald's franchises and Spanish-speaking radio stations) since 1976. He served as Chairman of the Latino Redistricting Committee. He has been involved in many non-profit organizations including serving as the Executive Director of the Chicano Federation and the President of the Latino American Political Association. He is a graduate of Hoover High School and earned a Master of Social Work degree at San Diego State University.
Marti Emerald has served as the Councilmember for the current District 7 since 2008, where she is serving her third year as the Chair of the Public Safety & Neighborhood Services Committee. Formerly a resident of Tierrasanta, she recently moved to College View Estates. She was a broadcast journalist for 30 years, most notably as the Consumer Advocate ("The Troubleshooter") for KGTV-10. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from National University.

Thank You! ... from the College Area BID
Thank you to everyone who came out to support local restaurant owners at the 2nd Annual College Area Taste on Sunday, April 15, 2012! About 300 people attended this four hour event that featured 24 local College Area restaurants.
It was nice to see Old Town Trolleys cruising our neighborhood bearing signs for the College Area Taste! Throughout the event the trolleys were filled with faces from Rolando, El Cerrito, the College Area, and new faces from outside the neighborhood. Several radio stations had a presence at local eateries to increase awareness of the event.
As people walking down the street waved and smiled at each other we were reminded of the reasons why we put on events like this. Our neighborhood, our residents, and our business owners all enjoy having a place to call their own and be proud of. For us, that's the College Area. Thanks for showing your support!
