SDSU Receives a Record

Number of Applications

San Diego State University received 69,225 undergraduate applications for the fall 2012 semester, the most applications ever received by the university and a 15 percent increase over last year. The application period for fall 2012 closed on November 30. Among the applications are 50,705 freshmen and 18,181 upper-division transfer students.

"I am extremely pleased to see the strong and continuing interest of applicants in San Diego State," said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. "Our record number of applicants is a testament to the strength of our academic and co-curricular programs, as well as the extraordinary talents and efforts of our faculty, staff and students."

The academic caliber of students applying to SDSU continues to rise. The fall 2011 freshmen enrollees were among the most academically accomplished in university history with an average high school GPA of 3.62 and 1080 SAT score (based only on the math and verbal sections total score of 1600).  SDSU's 2011 freshmen class was also the most diverse in university history, with 57 percent being students of color. SDSU is among the top 25 most diverse campuses in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2012."

Christmas Tree Recycling

Christmas Tree Recycling

The City of San Diego Environmental Services Department will be hosting the 38th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program from December 26, 2011 through January 23, 2012. The College Area drop-off location will be at SDSU Parking Lot D on Alvarado Road.

For curbside collection manual container customers using their own bins should place trees on the curb for collection on your regular greenery recycling pickup day. Trees over four feet in length should be cut in half. Automated container customers using the large, green 96-gallon bin provided by the city should cut their trees to fit into the automated container for pickup on collection day.

Both green and flocked trees (fake snow) are accepted; artificial trees are not accepted. All tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel, and other tree decorations must be removed.  Please do not illegally dump any other items at the drop-off locations.

HOLIDAY HOME SAFETY TIPS

  • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even if you will only be gone for a few minutes.
  • If you're out for the evening: Turn on lights and a radio or TV so it looks like someone's home.
  • Don't display gifts in view of your windows or doors.
  • Consider informing your neighbors if you will be away from your house for an extended period of time; ask them to watch your house and to park in your driveway occasionally.
  • Don't forget to have mail and newspapers stopped - or have a trusted neighbor collect them.
  • Immediately after Christmas, mark all new gifts with your California Driver's license or I.D. number.
  • If you have house guests, familiarize them with your security precautions and make sure they follow them.
  • Be sure any holiday decorations are child-proofed (secure trees, double check the safety of electrical decorations).
  • Don't advertise what you got for Christmas by putting the boxes out on trash day. Break the boxes down and put them in dark trash bags or take them to the dump

 SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS:

KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED!

DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING

VISIBLE IN YOUR CAR.

  • Carry your purse in front of you, next to your body, with the purse flap against you.
  • Carry your wallet in your front pocket.
  • Carry only the charge cards you will need.
  • Do not carry large sums of cash.
  • When charging an item, ensure you get your credit card back.
  • Don't overload yourself with packages and don't allow your attention to be distracted from your purse or packages.
  • Be particularly aware of persons in the parking lot, especially anyone near your car.
  • Shopping with kids? Teach your children to go to a store clerk and ask for help if you become separated in a store or shopping mall.
  • Don't hesitate to notify store security if you see suspicious activity immediately.
