Board elections to be held at
March 9 meeting

 

The College Area Community Planning Board (CACPB) will be conducting its annual elections at the meeting on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the College Rolando Library, 6600 Montezuma Road. Community residents who are registered to vote with the CACPB are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 p.m. to expedite distribution of ballots.

 

Anyone who signed up as a member of the College Area Community Council (CACC) since 2008 and any other community members who completed a CACPB registration form by February 9, 2011 are eligible to vote. Each registered member of the household is entitled to one ballot.  Community members should bring a driver's license or California identification card.  If the address listed on the driver's license or identification card is outside the College Area, proof of residency in the College Area is also required. Acceptable documentation includes a utility bill, credit card bill, or rental lease that lists the current College Area residence.

 

The CACPB is the City-recognized community planning group for the College Area.  Board members also serve concurrently on the College Area Community Council, and meeting of the CACC and CACPB are held jointly.

 

There are six three-year seats that will be filled by election on March 9. To be eligible to run, an individual must be a community resident, property owner or business owner within the College Area and must have attended a minimum of two CACPB meetings between February 2010 and February 2011.

 

Seven people have filed to run for the six seats:

 

Steve Barlow is a resident property owner on 68th Street who has lived in the College Area for 7 years. Steve is a research scientist in the SDSU Biology Department.  He is an incumbent CACPB member and is Chair of the Saranac Mohawk Community Group.

 

John Burkett is a resident property owner on Catoctin Drive who has lived in the College Area for 2 years.  John is a budget administrator for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He is an incumbent CACPB member and is involved in the Rolando Little League and La Mesa American Youth Soccer Organization.

 

Jean Hoeger is a resident property owner on Redding Road who has lived in the College Area for 25 years.  Jean is a teacher in the San Diego Unified School District.  She is a member of the CACC Code Enforcement & Nuisance Rental Properties Committee and is active in the College View Estates Association.

 

 Robert Montana is a resident property owner on Mary Lane Drive who has lived in the College Area for 18 years.  Robert is a consultant and an instructor in the Grossmont Community College District. He is an incumbent CACPB member and a member of the CACPB Project Review Committee.

 

Frank Musgrove is a resident property owner on Collwood Boulevard who has lived in the College Area for 18 years.  He is an AV Production Technician at Qualcomm. He is an incumbent CACPB member and volunteers for the San Diego Junior Theatre.

 

Alfredo C. Valverde, Jr. is a resident property owner on Toyon Road who has lived in the College Area for 26 years.  Alfredo is a financial investor at SEI.  He is Vice President of the Alvarado Estates Association and serves on the Francis Parker School Development and Philanthropy Committee.

 

Mitch Younker is a resident property owner on Collier Avenue who has lived in the College Area for 35 yeas.  Mitch is retired and is an incumbent CACPB member and a member of the CACC Code Enforcement and Nuisance Rental Properties Committee.

 

Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the time of the election, provided they meet the eligibility criteria listed above.

 

Elections of officers for the 2011-12 term will be held at the April 13 meeting.

Explore SDSU Open House on Saturday, March 19 is the

Centerpiece of SDSU Month

SDSU Month features 31 days of artistic, academic and athletic events, special offers from local businesses and a partner-supported media campaign to raise awareness of SDSU's outstanding people and programs.

Explore SDSU on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  is a free all-campus open house featuring an information fair, academic program workshops, tours, and open houses. This is a great opportunity for prospective students to explore what life's like as an SDSU student and for alumni to come back and see what's changed.

In addition to activities for prospective students and alumni, there are dozens of activities for  community members of all ages. Young future Aztecs will delight in the Family Village festivities, featuring live music, a bounce house, special entertainment performances and appearances by popular PBS characters. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the SDSU Science and Engineering Sampler, which is the kick-off event for the San Diego Science Festival.

Rolando Street Fair Coming

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 27, for the 15th Annual Rolando Street Fair, located on Rolando Blvd. between El Cajon Blvd. and Solita Avenue from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Rolando Community Council, a local 501(c)3, is pleased to announce a $3,000 grant from Marty Emerald's 7th District Council Office and an award of $3,100 from the San Diego City Arts Council to support the fair production.

 

Over 100 vendor booths and non-profit community organizations are participating with hand-made items for sale, delicious food, and services to offer.  There will also be a Kid's Corner with rides and activities.

 

The music has been booked with awesome local talent. The band schedule includes, Gone Tomorrow, Steph Johnson, Billy Midnight, Quino of Big Mountain with full band, and Len Rainey and the Midnight Players.
