Being Thankful

 John Bidaurreta

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (The Message)

16-18Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.

I AM THANKFUL ...

For the taxes that I pay,
because it means that I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party,
because it means that I have been
surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug,
because it means I have enough to eat.

For a lawn that needs mowing,
windows that need cleaning,
and gutters that need fixing,
because it means I have a home.

For the parking spot I find at the far
end of the parking lot, because it means
I am capable of walking and that I have
been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill,
because it means I am warm.

For the lady (or man) behind me in church that
sings off key, because it means that
I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing,
because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles at
the end of the day, because it means
I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the
early morning hours, because it
means I am alive.

Hopefully these made you laugh and smile, especially the one about the person in church who sings off key, because most of the time that person is me.

Philippians 4:8-9 (The Message)

8-9Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

The Word of God tells us to focus on the positive things in our lives, not the negative things. To be doing our best we must have the proper perspective, to meditate on what God is doing, and not to dwell on what He has not done.

So don't get stressed out during the holidays this year, but instead focus on the real meaning of Christmas and keep thanking God for all His many blessings.   Thank you Father for sending your Son into our world, so that He could be an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and granting us eternal life.

Merry Christmas
