Consumer or Covenant-Temporal or Eternal
by Alice Ochs

2 Corinthians 4:17, 18: "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.  For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."

As a young child, I learned to drown the sorrows of abandonment and constant fear by focusing on "stuff".  I reversed the saying that we are to "use things and love people" and did the opposite.  Instead of experiencing the pain of the very real losses going on in my life, I stuffed the pain and used "things" as pain killers.  This was my first addiction.  After it, came drugs and other wrong attachments, as life became more and more unbearable.

Over the last 32 years, since I gave my heart to Jesus, God has miraculously delivered me from so many things, but the ax has not totally been laid to the tree of consumerism in my life.  I am truly excited that this Christmas season God is really dealing with this issue, using the bad economy and other things to box me into a corner.

All this time He has longed to take me in His arms and love all the pain of loss out of me, so I will stop trying to recapture the loss of people with the futile accumulation of things.  Even as I write this, His presence is here, bringing tears to my eyes, and reminding me of the excellence of covenant relationship with Him.

It is really true that the seen is temporary, while the unseen is eternal.
The holidays are a great time to give our hurts and disappointments to God and receive the greatest gift of all, the love of our Heavenly Father.
New Life

New LifeDear Friends,

Christmas is the time that we celebrate the Light coming into the world with the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:5 (AMP) says the "Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it!" Let's rejoice in the faithfulness of God - no obstacle can stop His light!

We invite you to incorporate Christmas Eve worship at New Life from 5-6 PM into your family plans for this year, as we celebrate the Light that has come into the world, and is ever shining in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Every Blessing,

Caleb & Rachel
