Exam Season
by Isaac Munene
Pastor Eric taught last Sunday about the Day of Atonement being a day of self affliction. This day was so important that the Lord said that anyone who did not participate in it would be cut off from Israel. The gravity of this started me thinking about why we need to examine ourselves during this season of the Day of Atonement, and I came up with a few points: 1. The Bible shows us in Ephesians 5:13 that true examination can only take place in the light because it is light that manifests all things. If we are to have fellowship with one another, then we have to remain under examination in the light. (I John 1:6-7)
2. In biblical times, the lepers had to show themselves to the priests, who were to examine them carefully. If someone was found to be a leper, he was isolated from society. On the other hand if a leper was found to be healed after examination, he was free to rejoin his family and society at large. We need to allow our High Priest to examine us and cleanse us of any sin so that we can maintain a place of intimacy with Him.
3. If we examine ourselves, we will know if we are still in the faith. 2 Corinthians 13:5 admonishes us to examine, test and evaluate ourselves to determine whether or not we are holding to our faith and showing the proper fruits of it.
4. Examination will also keep us on the straight and narrow path. King David prayed, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)
