Shine Your Light Ann Munene |

John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
I was sitting at my desk at work last week, and as always, I was playing Elijah Streams (Christian radio station) when two new clients walked into the office. After greeting them and having them wait to go into see my boss, we sat there quietly with the music playing in the background. After a while they peered over my desk a couple of times and there seemed to be a tension or an uncomfortable feeling arising in the room. I began to think that I should turn off the music, but immediately an opposite and more positive reaction occurred to me-maybe this is what they need, HOPE! I then begun to think about a quote I heard on the movie "Akeelah and the Bee":
"We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the Glory of God that is within us. And as we let our light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.'
I am blessed to work in a place where I am allowed to play whatever music I please and why not pass that blessing along to others. I realized in that moment that as I was allowing the light of the Lord to shine at my workplace, the tension I felt was not a personal one but a spiritual one and I choose to consciously shine the light of Jesus. Crystal Lewis sings a song called "beauty for ashes" and part of the lyrics go something like this, "He has given me beauty for ashes, strength for fear, gladness for mourning, peace for despair" Some of the people I encounter at my work are in despair, mourning, fear and feel like their lives are in ashes and just as the Lord's light has changed my life into beauty, strength, joy and peace He can change someone else's life as well.
Naturally light doesn't always make us feel comfortable but it is a good thing. When you are in a dark room and the light is turned on our first reaction is to hide from that light, we cover our eyes or hide our whole face but the more and more we get exposed to the light we begin to adjust and get to the point where we let the light in. There are people in our world stumbling in darkness, some hiding from the light, but we have to continuously let our light shine and the more we let our light shine they will let it in so that they no longer stumble in the darkness but enjoy the blessing of walking in the light, in relationship with God. |
