False Positive Tests for Influenza
Several public health departments have noted a high number of false positive rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) coming from physicians' offices. This is not unusual at this point in the season as the positive predictive value of RIDTs is poor (~60%) when influenza circulation is low (usually early or late in the season). CDC provides information on the performance of RIDTs as well as guidance for clinicians on their use and interpretation.
Every Child by Two Videos
Every Child by Two is releasing two videos to promote vaccination. The first video will be seen on US Airways and Virgin America in November and Delta Air in December. The second video will be running on the jumbo screen in Times Square, NYC from November through January 1, 2012.
NACCHO and CDC Team up to Improve Antibiotic Use
November 14-20 is Get Smart about Antibiotics Week. CDC and its partners will promote appropriate antibiotic use in inpatient and outpatient settings with a special focus on nursing homes and long-term care facilities. CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work and Get Smart for Healthcare programs are specifically designed to educate consumers and healthcare providers about appropriate use of antibiotics.
