Resources for Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients

Ongoing outbreaks resulting from unsafe injection practices in outpatient oncology settings have highlighted the role of health departments in investigating, responding to, and preventing such infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through the Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients program, has developed the following resources that local health departments can share with health care providers, patients, and care givers to help reduce the risk of developing potentially life-threatening infections during chemotherapy treatment:

Updated Meningococcal Vaccine Information Statement

The CDC's Meningococcal vaccine information statement has recently been updated and is now available. This VIS includes updates in contraindication, precaution, and adverse event information, and thus, its use should begin immediately.  

 

FDA Statement on Jet Injector Vaccines 

FDA has recently received questions regarding the use of jet injector devices to administer inactivated influenza vaccines. Currently, there is only one vaccine, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), that is approved and specifically labeled for administration by jet injector. At this time, there are no inactivated influenza vaccines that are approved and specifically labeled by the FDA for administration by jet injector. Read the FDA statement


ACIP Recommends 11-12 Year-Old Males Get HPV Vaccine 

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently took another step in the battle against HPV, a leading cause of various sexually transmitted diseases, as well as certain forms of cancers, by recommending vaccination of males. CDC Statement on Results from Malaria Vaccine Trial  

The CDC recently announced results from the clinical trial in Africa of a malaria vaccine candidate. These results show that the vaccine prevented about half of malaria cases, including the most severe, in young children. Learn more.

Become an ACHIEVE Community

NACCHO recently released a request for applications for ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental changE). The 2012 ACHIEVE initiative will include an emphasis on peer mentoring. Three new communities (mentees) and three current ACHIEVE communities (mentors) will be selected, for a total of six funded communities. Both potential applicants must submit a joint application.
