Home Fire Safety Check List

Did you know that we note "Safety Issues" in our Inspection Reports?

Ohio Fire Stats A residential fire occurs every half hour in Ohio according to the State Fire Marshal. How safe is your home from fire? To determine the safety of your home from fire hazards, study these questions with your family. Every "yes" answer indicates a positive fire safety situation. However, every "no" answer points to a fire hazard that needs to be corrected.

Electrical Hazards

Do you have qualified electricians install or extend your wiring?
Do you have adequate circuit breaker fuses for the equipment used in your home?
Are there enough electrical outlets in every room to avoid the need for multiple attachment plugs and long extension cords?

Water Water Everywhere
Did you know that, according to the EPA's Water Sense program, the average American family of four can use 400 gallons of water every day?

Washing dishes with an open tap alone can use up to 20 gallons.  You can save 10% just by filling the sink and closing the tap as you soap and scrub, or save 30% by replacing your old 2.2 gallon-per-minute (gpm) kitchen faucet with a low-flow model rated at 1.5 gpm.

Insurance Costs
A call to your insurance provider can often save on the fixed cost of homeowner's insurance.  Ask about discounts for:
  • Monitored Security Systems,
  • New Wiring / Electrical upgrades,
  • New furnace, air conditioning and/or water tank,
  • Near a fire hydrant,
  • Over age 55 or no claims in 10 years,
  • List the spouse with the better credit score first when applying for a policy,
  • Bundle by using one company for multiple policies.
Taking Staging to a New Level
Thinking Outside the Box

In 1978, Bernie Marcus, 49, had just been fired from a chain of hardware stores. He had few options, so he did what he had been talking about doing for years: He started his own hardware chain. It helped that he did not have another choice. At every turn, he would have to be "clutch"-that is, excel under immense pressure. His stores would be different from all other hardware stores-they'd be warehouses filled floor to ceiling with everything needed to fix or improve a home.

A great plan, except he didn't have enough money to fully stock the first two stores. One store looked more like a going-out-of-business sale than a grand opening. But he came up with a solution born as much of his street smarts as of his two decades in retailing: "We bought boxes. We bought empty paint cans. We had to give the illusion that we had merchandise." Two years after the first store opened, the concept was doing so well that Marcus and his partners decided to take the company - The Home Depot - public.
