Crawl Spaces

Should a crawl space be vented and have a vapor barrier installed?

Yes. The IRC and most all of the past codes required at leased a minimum of 1 sq.ft./150 sq.ft.of under-floor area of ventilation. Vents should be installed within 3ft. of each corner.

Crawl spaces need good cross venting to keep it dry. Vapor barriers are usually installed in crawl spaces that are damp or wet. However, local code authority can require one in a dry crawl space as well. If vents exist, it is recommended that floor joists and all water pipes be insulated.
