Ask the Inspector
What are the black streaks on asphalt shingles?
This is usually some form of algae. The streaks and discoloration are an accumulation of their dead, dark colored cells. While algae can grow just about everywhere is the United States, it really likes humid environments. Copper, gold or zinc strips can be installed to prevent algae growth. Algae-resistance shingles are also available. |
