The "Honey-Do" List
September is National Preparedness Month

Knowing what to do in a natural or human-made disaster is often the difference between survival and loss.

  • Pick safe places in your home where you can go in case of a tornado, earthquake or other emergency.
  • Plan ahead so you know places that will allow pets if you need to evacuate your home.

  • Prepare "Ready-to-Stay" and "Ready-to-Go" kits for emergency situations.

Items to include in both kits

according to the Home Safety Council.

Happy Labor Day

Most Americans consider Labor Day a uniquely American experience, but Labor Day has it's origins in Canada.

  • Stemming from labor disputes in Toronto, in 1872 a parade was held in support of a strike against the 58 hour workweek.
  • First U. S. observance was in the form of a parade in New York City in 1882.
  • Oregon was the first state to declare Labor Day an official holiday.
  • Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a national holdiay in 1894.
  • The first Waffle House opened on Labor Day 1955.

Ask the Inspector

What are the black streaks on asphalt shingles?

This is usually some form of algae. The streaks and discoloration are an accumulation of their dead, dark colored cells. While algae can grow just about everywhere is the United States, it really likes humid environments. Copper, gold or zinc strips can be installed to prevent algae growth. Algae-resistance shingles are also available.

Ever think about your house number?

House numbers should be clear enough so that police, fire and paramedics can quickly locate properties in an emergency.

Ambulance

Numbers are often the only way that first-responders can identify their intended destinations.  As most of us have learned, TomTom can often be WrongWrong, so think also of the pizza delivery guy who runs late because he can't find your house.

Consider the following recommendations:
  • The numbers should be large, within reason. Try to make them at least 5 or 6 inches tall.
  • The numbers should be of a color that contrasts with their background. Reflective numbers are great because they are easier to see at night.
