These outlandish structures display architectural humor and prankishness. And some of them are darned well-designed, too.

Ask Erick
How can doors be adapted for a wheelchair?

To save money, see if replacing hinges on the doors with "offset hinges" will do the trick.  These Z-shaped devices create about 2 extra inches of cleOffset hingearance by swinging a door entirely clear of its frame.  With a regular hinge, a standard 32" doorway is only about 30" wide, reduced by the thickness of the door.  Offset hinges are sold at many hardware stores and cost about $30 (the number typically needed for a door) and often screw directly into the holes left by the old hinges.

Safety First
March is Poison Prevention Month
While spring cleaning remember there are countless dangerous substances in your home and garage, please put hazardous items in their proper place.
  • If you have children or visiting children, purchase products with child-resistant packaging.
  • Toss medicines past the expiration date listed on the label.  Do not flush unused medicine in the sink or toilet, instead, remove the label, wrap the bottle in a plastic bag and throw in a covered trash container.
  • Keep gasoline, antifreeze, other car fluids, pesticides and garden products in locked cabinets in your garage.

Extend Your Smartphone's Battery Life
  • Reduce display brightness to as low as you find readable, or set to "auto".
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using them, so they are not constantly scanning.
  • Unplug the phone when it is at maximum charge.  Leaving it plugged in heads oup the batter causing it to war out faster.

Routine Maintenance Prevents Expensive Repairs
These repairs can prepare a home for listing also:
  • Inspect storm doors and window screens and make repairs as needed.
  • Inspect basement walls for seepage or staining.
  • Establish or update a home-maintenance file.  Be sure to display during showings!
  • Use a soft brush to clean the gaskets around the door and frame of the dishwasher to prevent food debris from weakening the seal and causing a leak.
Snap, Crackle, Pop and Splash!
In an emergency, could you quickly and efficiently turn off your electricity, water and/or gas?

Shut off valveDo you know where your emergency shutoffs are?
Do you know how to turn them off?
You really should -- it could save you a lot of damage and money if water is cascading from a ceiling, electricity is arcing and sparking within your walls, or you smell a leak in a gas line.
