What healthcare needs is systems engineering
By Dr. John D. Evans, corporate vice president of business Innovation, Lockheed Martin
Dr. John D. Evans shares his thoughts in this video presentation, at the 2011 Stanford Graduate School of Business Healthcare Summit, about the importance of leveraging systems engineering in the healthcare sector. Using intensive care units as an example, Evans points out that no one has ever really sat down with a clean sheet of paper and said, "This is the mission." He says what the intensive care unit, and the healthcare market in general, needs is for innovators to create efficient designs not just for individual technologies, but for the whole system. Evans presents a generalized model for a systems engineering that he believes should be applied to healthcare.

| Improving efficiency with EMRs
By Amanda Mewborn, RN,PMC,CPN,CPHIMS,DSHS
SHS member and Diplomate Amanda Mewborn makes the case in the online publication, Advance, that the benefits of electronic medical records (EMR) can't be fully achieved unless a systems approach to removing waste and non-nursing tasks is taken. Rather than driving efficiency, EMR's are the glue that can hold well-designed process together to achieve total hospital efficiency. |

Aviation crew resource management: A flight plan to patient safety
By Ragunathan Kanagaretnam, Ph.D., Quality Associates SB and Ranjini Ragunathan, BSIE, Hospital for Special Surgery
In this presentation at the 2012 SHS Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference, the authors discuss how aircraft accidents and patient safety failures are generally related to a lack of communicating and decision making skills in dynamic environments. Crew resource management (CRM) was developed by the aviation industry resulting in dramatic improvement in airline safety. Based on this success, CRM training and methods are being adopted by healthcare organizations throughout the world to improve patient safety.

A novel approach to identifying targets for cost reduction in the emergency department
Smulowitz PB, Honigman L, Landon BE, Department of Emergency Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Hospitals would save more money by reducing avoidable patient admissions from the ED than by preventing non-urgent ED visits, according to a study (abstract only) in the Annals of Emergency Medicine. Researchers found that the cost of expanding urgent care centers or extending primary care hours would offset these savings of reducing minor injury and illness visits to the ED. However, substantial benefits could be realized by investing in systems that reduce ED admissions through comprehensive patient-centered care. |
