Many of us in the U.S. just finished celebrating the holiday of Thanksgiving. Other countries and cultures have a similar holiday on other dates, but the theme is the same, to encourage people to think about what good things they have - instead of merely the things they want. In that spirit, I'd like to consider some things that we as IIE's can be thankful for:

Current events
  • PID has completed 10 very successful PID webinars since the program was begun in May 2009, with 6 webinars done during 2010. Half of the 2010 webinars had attendance of 100-150! Past webinar broadcasts and chart sets can be found at http://www.iienet2.org/Landing?id=887
     
  • PID Membership has increased for both students (1,035 to 1,085) and professionals (691 to 747) since March 2010. 
     
  • Plans are almost complete for the 2011 PID webinar series. The 2011 webinars include presentations on energy conservation and project management as well as traditional manufacturing topics. See the article below.
     
  • Martin Stein and Shiona Kamermans have put together a "Glossary of Manufacturing Management" that should be very helpful to Process Industry professionals. The glossary provides definitions for a wide variety of terms commonly used by IEs.If you would like a copy, contact Martin Stein (martin.stein@comcast.net). Martin would particularly welcome feedback on definitions and additional terms that could be included.

Process Industry track at the annual conference
 

Joseph Paris, XONITEK will chair the Process Industries track at the IIE annual conference in 2011.A number of abstracts have been submitted (and the official application deadline has actually passed). However, if you are interested in presenting - there may still be an opportunity to submit an abstract.Contact Joseph Paris (parisfj@xonitek.com) for more information.

2010 PID Student Paper Competition - happening now!


How many of the "best and brightest" student IEs are planning a career in the Process Industries? (How many student IEs even know that the Process Industries employ IEs?)PID is working to make sure that new IEs consider the Process Industries as they make career plans. Luis Armendariz chairs the 2010 PID Student Paper Competition committee. The competition consists of a real life problem - batch manufacturing staffing - that students are asked to solve and report on. Bharat Kona put together a data set for the problem and the committee - including Luis, Bharat, Vincent Howell, Peter King and Bennett Foster formulated the problem statement and criteria for judging submissions.Hershey and DuPont have each donated $1,000 for prizes.Awards will be made during the IIE Annual Conference 2011 awards dinner.

Monthly PID Advisory Board telephone meetings
 
The PID board holds a one-hour call each month, both to discuss administrative details (approximately 20 minutes) and to conduct a roundtable discussion on a topic of current interest to IEs (20 to 30 minutes). All PID members are welcome to participate.
