The 4 Rs of your continued IE relevance
By Lew Cox
To say the last few years in industry have been volatile is a great understatement. A number of the people you know, as well as a number of your friends, have probably been given the opportunity to make a career adjustment, albeit not voluntarily. A few, because of the same conditions, have more than likely been given additional duties and challenges which, though burdensome at the moment, should augur well for their advancement in the longer haul. To maintain relevance to the IE profession, and perhaps to stay employed, industrial engineers should be careful to pursue the four Rs of Read, Re-educate, Reflect and Repeat. Full article

What's in a name - or set of initials?
By Lew Cox
A major source of conversation and point of contention in the field of industrial engineering is the name, itself. As members recall, there was a vote last year on whether or not to change the name of the Institute. Also as members recall, it was voted down. Yet, the unease over the term industrial engineer - the initials "IE", the IE profession, and the concise definition and content of the terms -continues. Note the "On the boards"content and discussion in the March and April 2010 issues of Industrial Engineer magazine. Read more

What's a body to do?
By Lew Cox
Today's economic thus, industrial, situation is more than a little volatile, and the news media reflects it all too well. Indeed, if one dwells on current news too long, it might be tempting to either take to hard liquor or develop some kind of personally induced chemical imbalance. A potpourri of headlines taken from the SME Daily Executive Briefing provide some justification for that comment. More

Greater Kansas City Chapter News (Chapter 92)
One of the most fertile fields for use of industrial engineering techniques and tools is in hospitals. For IE work in hospitals the meanings of just
terms like "production," "assembly line," "safety stock," et al, have to be mentally and emotionally adjusted to take into account the fact that the applications now have a direct effect on human lives.
