Misconceptions - and Their Consequences - Abound
Long-standing misconceptions are hurting the profession of industrial engineering in its efforts to recruit new students into the field. Some recent short articles and quotes bear this out.

An article in the Dec. 9, 2009, issue of The Oklahoman reports the results of a recent survey conducted by Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs. The Oklahoman noted "A recent national poll of teens showed 52 percent have little or no interest in a manufacturing career, and another 21 percent are ambivalent.
A majority, or 61 percent, said their goal is a professional career."  For some reason, it seems, they do not see the connection between a manufacturing career, heavily populated by engineers, and a "professional career." Full article

Sustainability, Fleas, and IEs

As newsletter readers know, professional and lay publications/media tend to jump from one term and acronym to the next more current term and acronym. As the globe's population gradually becomes more aware of the limitations of the earth's resources, the term "sustainability" has become more prevalent in the literature. One addressing of the word (see Wikipedia) looks at the three circles of social, environmental, and economic, and the inevitable intersections of each two, as well as all three.

In Careers of the Future, Jessica Renee Napier suggests one of the future hot careers will be that of "sustainability coordinator."   While different definitions abound, the term "sustainable" or "sustainable development" basically refers to the globe's  population operating in such a way that its needs are met, but not damaging or compromising the earth and its resources in such a way that future generations can't meet their needs. Seeing that this happens is what Napier sees as the job of sustainability coordinator.

It's Time for a Conference

If your supervisor walks by and drops the comment, "It's time for a conference," it may not augur well. In this case, "It's time for a conference" is a very good thing.

It is the New Year, and time for IIE's round of university regional conferences. One of the major parts of these student chapter conferences is the technical paper competitions, giving the regional winners the opportunity to present papers at the IIE Annual Conference in Cancún in June. Conducting research, writing a paper, making up a presentation of the results, and orally presenting the research at the regional student conference is an outstanding way to gain some experience that will help in one's career preparation. Such a presentation, with or without the winning of the regional title, is a great addition to a resume.   Read more

IEs, Groucho, Self-Improvement, and Self-Preservation

Over the past decade or so, there has been a spate of books with titles such as "All I needed to know about _______, I learned in ______."  While there is no book of a similar title that quite covers it, much of what your friendly newsletter editor has learned has been from old comedians and their comments. Brace yourself. Some old and bad puns follow.

One such old joke went roughly as follows.

Two friends approached each other on the street.  One says to the other, "I haven't seen you in a while.  How's it going?  You look a little pale."

The second person replies, "Well, I have been out for a while.  I had to have surgery."

The first person says, "Oh, really.  Have a scar?"

The second replies, "No thanks.  I don't smoke." Read more

October Greensburg Tour
On May 4, 2007, the city of Greensburg, Kansas, was devastated by a tornado. In making plans for the city's rebuilding efforts, the city noted its name already contained the word "Green," so the decision was made to have the rebuilt city live up to its name.
