Ultimately, the successful implementation of optimization and continuous improvement initiatives necessary to promote efficient, patient-centric care within a healthcare organization is dependent on management support. Small Sample Statistics: A Guide to Selecting Your Method of Analysis

"In hospital settings it is common to have a small dataset (less than 30 data points), especially for pilot studies. Also, certain clinical data may be highly skewed or bimodal (a histogram shows two "mountains" instead of one). In these situations, non-parametric inference testing should be considered. However, given the variety of non-parametric tests, the question of what test to use for what problem can be challenging. The chart is a reference for the most commonly used non-parametric methods." Chart

Premium Pay: Are You Paying Too Much For Your Labor?
 
In a presentation given at the 2009 SHS Conference in Chicago, Sandy Yanko provides a strategic framework for addressing this critical issue in managing hospital labor expenses.Sandy is vice president of operations in the HCA Far West Division.  Sandy describes the different types of premium pay, best practices for reporting and controlling of premium pay, and how staffing levels and selective use of different premium pay types can be set to fulfill staff expectations and still be responsive to variation in patient demand. Title: Lean Production Methods as applied to the Medication Optimization Process

Presenter:Pat Brugnoni, managing director, Performance Optimization/Lean/Six Sigma Solutions

Recap: Forty-nine (49) people attended this recent Lean Production Methods webinar led by Pat Brugnoni.The webinar discussed how the tools of Lean can make dramatic improvement changes when used in a clinical setting around medications. This can include (but is not limited to) medication acquiring, preparation, administration, documentation and storage.

Pat brought more than 35 years of experience to the webinar, having spent those years as a hospital administrator, nursing leader, change agent consultant, and performance improvement expert.Through this wealth of experience, she was able to share case studies from her clients and their experiences in medication optimization.Attendee feedback has been very positive.
