Thanksgiving |
I heard someone say that Halloween was their favorite holiday because it kicked off the Holiday Season with no pressure - no turkey that had to look and taste just right, no need to find the perfect gift, no need to find the perfect party clothes. I never thought of Halloween as being part of the Holiday Season, but I kind of like that perspective. Before we know it Thanksgiving will be upon us. With my newfound perspective, I began thinking of what I have to be thankful for. In a professional context, I have found over the past ten years that IIE has been a perfect example of how giving gives back many fold. At a point when I was "between jobs," my IIE Chapter had disbanded and the nearest chapter had been in-active for a few years. A group was trying to get the chapter back on its feet and sent out an e-mail requesting volunteers. I responded and became newsletter editor, then chapter president. A few years later I was asked to run for Regional Vice President and then to run for re-election. Recently I was asked to chair a track at the national convention. This has taken time and not all of my expenses have been reimbursed by IIE or my employers but the benefits have far exceeded the costs. I have had an opportunity to meet and work with some of the most outstanding folks I know. I have been asked to sit on professional boards with fascinating and influential people. My professional activities have been an asset on my resume and, I believe, have contributed to my success over this period. This is not why I volunteered - I wanted to make a small contribution to the profession that had served me well. In retrospect, however, that small contribution has resulted in much that I have to be thankful for as I contemplate the next holiday of the season.
Some chapters in the region (Rhode Island and Central Pennsylvania) have been inactive and might be disbanded. Many chapters are preparing to elect officers for the upcoming year. I urge you to consider giving a bit of yourself to your profession by volunteering to keep your chapter alive or to contribute to the growth of your chapter. If this month you volunteer to take a leadership position of any type, I am willing to bet that 12 months from now, you too will have unexpected things in your life for which to be thankful.

Northeast Region October Webinar
Topic: Northeast Region Jobs Preparation
The webinar held on Oct. 20 was one of the most popular we have held with 20 people from six different states in the region and a couple of folks from outside the region participating. Those responding to the survey thus far have, on a scale of 1 to 5, rated the program as 4. If you were not able to join us, you missed a excellent presentation and a good question and answer discussion. You can view the webinar on the IIE webinar page. Thanks to the Boston Chapter for hosting the event and to guest speaker Joe DiNuzzo. |
