President's Message

Greetings from IIE's Process Industries Division
, and welcome to our first bi-monthly newsletter!  The reason that you are receiving this is that when you joined IIE, or renewed your membership, you checked Process Industries as one of your areas of interest. While some of you may have checked that box from a very casual interest, I hope you will all find this newsletter and our other activities useful to your pursuit of engineering excellence.

The Process Industries Division (PID) was founded on the belief that manufacturing operations that produce paints, salad dressings, synthetic fibers, plastics and ceramics, and pharmaceuticals are quite different from operations that assemble refrigerators, automobiles, cell phones, lawn mowers, and medical instruments. The differences are significant enough that industrial engineers working in a process environment face challenges unique to those operations, and must adapt traditional IE tools to apply them successfully. Article: Making Cereal, Not Cars

By Peter King, Douglas R. Kroeger, J. Bennett Foster, Nathan Williams and William Proctor

Several members of the Process Industries Division co-authored an article, Making Cereal, Not Cars, which appeared in the December 2008 issue of IE magazine. The article highlights some of the key differences between process manufacturing and assembly manufacturing, and the challenges that poses to IEs working in that environment. An expanded version of the article with additional figures is presented here. Full article
