Getting your ticket to Cancún
|
|
During last month's Northeast Region Webinar, hosted by the Raritan Valley Chapter, Jason Friedman, made an excellent presentation - sharing the benefits of attending the IIE Annual Conference for the first time in 2009. That was the third conference I had attended and only the second that I was able to stay for the program and not just the Regional Vice Presidents Meeting. In my case, I had been an IIE member for almost 30 years before my first conference. Like Jason I was very surprised at the value I received.
I think that IEs are, in general, the most outgoing engineers and those who attend the conference or are involved in IIE leadership even more so. Thus, not only was the networking extremely valuable, it was a lot of fun. Part of my hesitancy in the past is that I have not chosen to apply my profession in the manufacturing sector and was concerned that the program would have little value for me. Instead I was enlightened by presentations very relevant to the types of public sector and international work on which I focus. The range of presentation tracks is very inclusive providing value for Industrial Engineers plying their trade in a wide rang of "industries." Bottom line, personally I am sold and will do all I can to make attendance an annual event. But next year's conference is not until June - why is this discussion relevant now? For most of us, the cost of attending any conference is prohibitive unless paid for in part or entirely by our employer. Next year's IIE Conference is in Cancún. Given the economy and the location of the conference, the buzz is that getting our employers to cover the expense of attending the conference will be more difficult than ever. This means that making the business case on how the company will benefit will likely be very important. Part of that case might be that you are making a presentation on a company success which will enhance the company brand and could lead to more work or profits. If so, your abstract is due in mid November; so now is the time to build support and perhaps collaborators for you presentation and put together a great abstract. But even if you are not making a presentation, now is a good time to start gathering the information to build your case for the benefits your employer can expect from paying for your ticket to Cancún. We can all use help in building that case. Please share your successes, failures and thoughts on how best to gain corporate approval on the Northeast Region LinkedIn group discussion board.
Hopefully we will meet face to face in Cancún!

First Training Program presented by Northeast Region was A SELL OUT! |
Lean-Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate Program First Training Program presented by the Northeast Region and hosted by the Boston chapter was A SELL OUT!
The host Boston Chapter had an unexpected albeit pleasant problem to deal with. With only 15 seats available, several days before the Oct. 3 Lean-Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate Program, online registrations suddenly jumped from just over 10 to 26! The Chapter had no choice but to schedule a second session for Nov. 14. But if you do the math you will realize that only six (6) seats remain for this session. The training itself was an overwhelming success with almost all of the attendees evaluating the session as an excellent value and a significant benefit provided by the Boston Chapter and Northeast Region of IIE. I have a feeling that we will have to schedule a third Yellow Belt Session after the first of the year and the attendees at this session expressed a good deal of interest in a Green Belt program to follow.
If you would like to fill one of the few remaining seats . . . IIE Annual Conference: Call for Abstracts |
|
John Corliss If you have heard me speak at either the national or Northeast Regional Conference you know that I passionately believe that IE's can make a unique contribution to sustainable social, economic and environmental development. Some of us make this contribution working on the sustainable development of our company domestically or globally. Others of us work with government, non-profit organizations on social or environmental projects at a local, national or international level. Some of us apply our IE skills to these endeavors as employees or consultants, while others do so as volunteers. I have recently created a new LinkedIn group for those with similar interests: Sustainable, Social, Economic, and Environmental Development --IIE. At the 2009 Institute of Industrial Engineers Annual Conference and Expo in Miami Florida, for the first time a "Social, Environment and Sustainability" track was included in the program. Although a small track it was successful, and this year I was asked and agreed to chair this track. · Have you applied your IE skills to improve the sustainability and good corporate citizenship of your company? · Have you applied your IE skills as a government employee to improve efficiency and the quality of services provided? · Have you applied your IE skills to improve the operations or the impacts of the efforts of a non-profit organization?
IE's make a positive difference in the world!
Share your experiences and inspire others by making a 20 or 60 minute presentation (including time for questions) at the IIE Annual Conference and Expo 2010"Rejuvenate your Career"
