And So The Pendelum Swings - and it Should

To say that the current global economic situation is volatile is the world's largest understatement.

Many U.S. industrial icons appear to have gone down the tubes with great rapidity. The poster child, and the industry with arguably the most visible impact on U.S. employment, is the auto industry. In the 1950's, the United States was the largest automobile market in the world, and General Motors, alone, accounted for greater than fifty percent of that market. The "Big Three" essentially owned the U.S auto market. A volkswagen Beetle was kind of a cute joke. An old cowboy star named Roy Rogers was touting a small Japanese pickup with the brand name "Datsun". Few people took them seriously. They were very light duty, and everyone knew their quality couldn't be very good. A friend of your Friendly Newsletter Editor owned a Toyota Corona and when driving to lunch would try to dodge the lane-marking doughnuts on Dallas' I-635. She said if she ran over the lane markers, it knocked the front end out of alignment. Your FNE ordered a new 1968 Olds 4-4-2, and it was finally made driveable on the 16th trip to the dealer, and with a week's wait. Anything built could be sold.  Full article

The Coin of the Realm

A variety of recent publications in various media contain what, on the surface, might appear to be unrelated stories but which, in total, constitute wise advice for Industrial Engineers and others. A summary of three of these follows.

In a recent newspaper article from one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., it was stated the keys to prosperity in the next 100 years are education, new talent, and a robust trade industry.  While the article referred to the industry specific to that metro area, the keys are valid across the U.S.

Second, the author of a separate article in the Wall Street Journal gives some advice for workers in today's economy.  more
Summer Job Search Strategies
By Deborah Walker
It's easy to lose career focus during the summer months. Kids home from school, warm sunny weather and household projects tend to distract job seekers. Additionally, the interview process often gets disrupted while employers accommodate multiple vacation schedules. These interruptions become an easy excuse to put a job search on hold until September. Don't give in to the temptation to take the summer off. Your summer sabbatical will add months to your job search. Increased competition in September means a smaller margin of error in interview performance. Keep your job-search momentum throughout the summer to avoid frustration in the fall. Tips to keep your job search moving forward

Serendipity and Lagniappe - Professional Chapters and Student Chapters

The word "serendipity" is in fairly common usage, meaning "the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way."  In not-so-common usage is the word "lagniappe", although those along the Gulf Coast are familiar with its meaning.  Basically, "lagniappe" means "a gift, something you may ask about and get without payment".  Those two words describe the best relationship between professional and student chapters of IIE.

The members of the Student Chapters will be more closely familiar with the IE faculty members at local universities than will the Professional members.  Thus, they will tend to know more about the research interests, consulting interests and assignments, body-of-knowledge specialties, and speaking interests of the faculty than will those working in industry.  This knowledge can be of great interest to the Professional Chapters, which are often in need of a good cadre of prospective speakers for their meetings. Read more
