Society for Health Systems and ASQ Announce Joint Conference

Alliance Aims to Build Better Health Care Delivery Systems
The Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and its Society for Health Systems (SHS), and ASQ's (American Society for Quality) Healthcare and Quality Management divisions, will launch a joint conference focused on health care quality and process improvement. The new joint conference will be held February 25-28, 2010, in Atlanta, Ga.

The conference will bring together health care quality professionals, performance improvement specialists and other health care professionals involved with or interested in developing the quality and operations improvement skills and knowledge needed to successfully manage complex health care environments.

"This is a tremendous advancement for the industry and a great opportunity for the members of both societies," said Pierce Story, immediate past president of SHS and managing director at Jumbee, Inc. "This powerful alliance will foster and strengthen the natural synergies between performance improvement and quality management, thus enabling a more effective and efficient health care system."  more

An Introduction to External Funding for Health Care Improvement

Priya Khatri, Sara Janke, Tom Best

Improvement champions throughout health care are currently faced with a difficult dilemma. The need for their work is greater now than ever before, but the weak economy is forcing hospital leaders to cut costs in many ways, and sometimes that means withholding funding from their improvement programs. Improvement efforts meant to reduce costs can be deterred by the realistic costs to implement the improvements such as researching new technology and piloting new processes.  Even worse, the costs to contract or employee improvement experts may seem superfluous if leadership prioritizes departments which provide direct patient care.

Fortunately, a few external funding opportunities do exist. Health care management engineers should look into corporate and government funding sources. This article presents resources that may prove useful to health care management engineers seeking external funding. Tips on grant writing are presented as well. Full article

What the heck is SHS President-Elect?

 Marci Jackson

President-Elect: "All the fun of leadership without the responsibility...but my time is coming".

My position of "elected, but not yet taken the position of President" is one of the many volunteer roles supporting the mission and members of SHS. Being elected into this position is a privilege which allows me to work directly for the SHS professionals changing the future of health care.

Specifically, the SHS bylaws state that the role of President-Elect assists the current President, develops the business plan for the coming year, and ultimately assumes the duties of the current President the next year. This succession structure has served the Society well for over 20 years. We have an active and passionate group of past presidents that are readily engaged with the Society.  This commitment will continue.  more from Marci
