Are You in the Right Field? |
With the trend in economic news, it is a mixed blessing to be a wired society. Most people have the tools to be kept up-to-date by radio, television, the Internet, cell phone, Blackberry, et al, and this means it is possible to keep yourself stressed out all day every day. When some days include news announcements from a half dozen or more of the largest and most respected names in manufacturing and service industries, with each name's news including layoffs in four or five digits, you may start to wonder, "Am I in the right or wrong industry or field? | When he was in graduate school, your Friendly Newsletter Editor (FNE) had a friend in the IE doctoral program who was not a member of IIE. The friend was asked by many of the other students in the program why he wasn't a member. His stock answer with a hint of sarcasm was "What has IIE done for me?" That answer begs the question "What have you done for IIE?" IIE membership is the epitome of "you get out of it what you put into it." The primary raison d' etre for IIE is improvement and continuing education of its members, and this requires deliberate two-way interaction. More |

IE Resolution for the New Year - - Learn a New Language |
Although we are approximately two months into 2009, you may find yourself still in need of a resolution for the New Year. If so, a pointer toward an appropriate resolution may be found in the outlets for an industry that has been greatly in the news of late; i.e., your local automobile dealership. If you browse the vehicle stickers at your local Chevrolet dealership, for instance, you will find at the bottom of the stickers in the "country of origin" area, notes such as "engine from China, transmission from Japan." You will also find, for example, that the Chevy Aveo is made by Daewoo, a South Korean auto manufacturer owned by GM. Indeed, there is no real "U.S. Made" automobile, and the same is true for most of the other auto makers around the world (i.e., there is no automobile that is completely domestically made), and much the same is true for other major and minor industries in the United States.
