| A New Year |
The sun is returning. The days are getting longer. The number at the end when we write the date is different. Only a second passed. But this particular second has people all over the world thinking of change, thinking of renewal. The same can be said for your professional organization. As we have eliminated long inactive chapters and expanded the service areas of our many Northeast Region chapters, many of you have or soon will receive notice that you are now part of a new local chapter. Most of these chapters have just elected new officers who are preparing their chapter's strategic plan for the coming year. What changes do they have in store -- what changes would you like to see? The region has a new website where you can keep up-to-date with our efforts to better serve all members including those who do not live within 50 miles of a professional chapter. We are also contemplating some exciting ideas to make the regional conference an event for both students and professionals.
At the national level, elections are under way. Have you voted yet? Have you expressed your opinion on the proposed name change? Yes, it is a time of change. It is a time of resolutions. Is being more active in your profession, giving back and taking advantage of your network on your list? If not, maybe you will consider this change this year. A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to All! | |

Value Stream Mapping-A Lean Assessment Tool
Jan. 12, 2009 - 6:30 p.m. EST | Cost: Free
Hosted by Long Island & Metro NY Chapter Speaker: John Boyko, Managing Partner, Summit Business Solutions
All too often process improvement efforts are disjointed and do not provide the level of organizational impact originally intended. To make matters worse, sustaining these improvement efforts is difficult if not impossible. A major reason for this breakdown is the fact that these efforts are not tied to an enterprise wide system and rarely satisfy an organization's strategic objectives.
Value Stream Mapping is a visualization tool that helps lean practitioners improve end to end systems and streamline processes through the use of lean tools. This powerful and efficient tool that originated in Toyota will clearly identify wasteful, non-value adding activities and help you develop your lean transformation roadmap.
This presentation will introduce the value stream mapping tool and discuss how it can be used in a variety of scenarios.
The presentation will discuss: · The difference between value stream maps and process maps · The 8-wastes of lean · How a value stream map of the current state is developed · How to transform the current state to an ideal or future state · Typical symbols used in value stream maps · How to get started on your own value stream map
John Boyko is a nationally recognized authority on lean enterprise who helps businesses grow and gain competitive advantage through the application of Toyota production system strategies, and the Baldrige process. Through his systematic, top-down approach, organizations learn how to focus on key objectives and systems level measurements that dramatically improve business performance in a short timeframe. His experience in lean includes more than 25 years in manufacturing and operations management for the automotive industry. A graduate engineer with degrees in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, Mr. Boyko is also a certified lean manufacturing specialist with the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). In 2005, Mr. Boyko was appointed by the United States Department of Commerce to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This prestigious award is presented each year by the President of the United States and is the nation's highest honor for business excellence. Mr Boyko is the managing partner of Summit Business Solutions, an organization providing consulting in process improvement strategies, software solutions and educational programs for industry.
