SAPSIS RIGGING AT USITT

USITT 2011

Come see us at Booth # 853

The USITT Conference this year takes place on March 9, 10, 11 & 12 in Charlotte, NC and Sapsis Rigging will be there.  Please come and visit us at Booth # 853.  We'll be showing our Focus Track System and the ProPlus Line of Fall Protection equipment as well as our new ProPlus Rescue System.  Joining me once again in the booth is Sales Manager Ildelis Cruz. Chris Harris, the head of our Safety Inspection Department will also be there to answer your inspection questions.  I'll be there, of course, along with a passel of Long Reach Long Riders.  We'll be holding our 8th annual benefit raffle, the start of which will be marked by the ever popular kazoo parade.  (This year we might even learn some songs)

Stump the Rigger will be back again this year.  Herb Hart (Columbus McKinnon) has agreed to sit on the panel for the first time.  Joining him on the star studded dais are Eric McAfee (JR Clancy, Inc),  Tray Allen (James Thomas Engineering) and yours truly.

Whomever truly stumps us will get to take possession of the much coveted Jack Suesse Memorial Trophy for a year and all the bragging rights that go with it. Jack, who passed away suddenly in 2008, was an industry icon who mentored many people (including me) over the years and who also helped pave the way for the automated rigging that we are all working with these days.  He also sat on this panel for a number of years.

The session takes place on Saturday, March 12th at 11 am.  Stop by, bring your best questions and enjoy the fun.

LEONARDO'S LAST SUPPER
Leonardo's Last Supper
Sapsis Rigging, Inc. (SRI) designed and installed the truss system for the multimedia exhibit Leonardo's Last Supper: A Vision by Peter Greenaway recently on view at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.  SRI built the support structure for a full-scale replica of the Refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan that would display a "clone" of da Vinci's masterpiece.

The truss rig measured approximately 38' high by 30' deep and 120' long.  In addition to supporting the larger-than-life recreation of da Vinci's famous painting The Last Supper, the rig held an array of audio-visual and lighting equipment.

"Working at the Park Avenue Armory is always interesting and this project was no different.  While getting the set into the right place was a bit of a challenge at times, it was great fun working with the Italian scenic artists," said project manager Michael Sapsis.

In Memoriam

David Taylor  1963 - 2011

David TaylorDavid Taylor, consultant, lighting designer and dear friend of the entertainment industry (and me) passed away on January 17th in Taipei.

David worked as a consultant for Theatre Projects Consultants and, in recent years, led the theatre design team for ARUP engineering  He was responsible for the designs of many, many wonderful projects around the world, not the least of which was the Kimmel Center in my hometown, Philadelphia.  He was a warm and passionate person who was the busiest and most playful individual I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  His contributions to the industry; in his building designs, his work with ESTA and PLASA and his show designs, have helped make make the world a much better place.

David sat on the Advisory Board for NATEAC and was an enormous help to me. He was always there with words of advice and encouragement. He was the quintessential optimist. He was one of the good guys and I will miss him very much.

A memorial service is being planned but dates have not yet been announced.
