The Long Reach Long RidersLong Reach Long Riders Ride Again

7th Annual Charity Ride July 24 -31, 2010

Last winter, David Edelstein of Triple E Ltd. Track asked me to join a charity motorcycle ride in the UK.  It was to be a similar ride to the Long Reach Long Riders that I do here in the States every summer.  Ride around the UK, see the sights and drink good beer?  Of course I agree.  The ride took place in June and it was good fun.  The weather, all things considered, behaved itself. Mostly.  The country roads were challenging and beautiful. The people on the ride were a trip.  Bikers, theatre people, a neurosurgeon, a lawyer and an accountant.  How could we go wrong?  Truth is, we didn't.  I even managed to stay on the proper side of the road.  To David and Brenda (who really put it all together) Sarah, Karen, Mic, Chris and all the others who helped make this a fun event, thanks for the memories.  See you next year.

So now I'm looking ahead to this years LRLR ride.  I'm sitting on my back deck surveying the damage from a storm that came through recently. More than half of the big maple tree came down. There's tree schmutz everywhere. While wondering when and how I was going to clean up the mess I started thinking about how good my life really is.  I've got a job.  (And a very busy job it is, thank you very much.)  I have great kids.  The roof doesn't leak and I'm pretty healthy for an old pharte.  In short, I'm doing darn well.

But not everyone can say that.  Lots of people are out of work.  Lots of people don't have health care coverage.  The entertainment industry isn't known as the most stable business in the world, right?

What I'm leading up to here is that the Long Reach Long Riders 7th annual charity ride is coming up later this month.  The charities that we ride for; The ESTA Foundations Behind the Scenes program and Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS, are reporting a significant upswing in the number of grant requests coming in to their offices.  There are a lot of people out there, theatre people, who are in need of our help.

So, I'm asking for your help.  Please donate something to one (or both!) of the charities.  Check under the sofa cushions, on top of the washer and on your dresser.  It doesn't take much to make a difference.  Help us help those in need by sponsoring a rider this year.  It'll make you feel good.  I
promise.

PLASA 2010

PLASA has put together a rigging conference that will run concurrently with the PLASA2010 at Earl's Court in London this coming September.  It's being billed as the PLASA International Rigging Conference and it will bring together some of the most respected riggers and engineers in the industry to discuss the constantly changing and growing, not to mention challenging, industry in which we work.

The PLASA International Rigging Conference should prove to be a valuable resource to anyone involved in the rigging business and I urge you to try and attend.  The Rigging Conference takes place on September 13 & 14, 2010 in London.  For more information, please visit http://www.plasariggingconference.com

Behind the ScenesThe ESTA Foundation's Behind the Scenes program has announced this year's holiday card lineup.  Yeah, I know it's mid July and it's elebenty seven degrees outside and no one is thinking about winter right now.  Except maybe wistfully.   But you know how it is, you put it off until the last minute and you discover that the cards have all been sold out and you're stuck with picking out really lame Hallmark cards at your nearby Walmart.  So save yourself the hassle, show your friends, neighbors and colleagues that you have some taste after all and order your cards today.  Cards are available in hard copy or in an electronic version.  All proceeds benefit the Behinds the Scenes program.
