The Long Reach Long RidersLong Reach Long Riders Ride Again

7th Annual Charity Ride July 24 -31, 2010

The Long Reach Long Riders are gearing up for their seventh annual charity motorcycle ride. The ride, which benefits the ESTA Foundation's Behind The Scenes program and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, begins in San Francisco on July 24, 2010.

The riders will assemble at the Presidio in San Francisco on the morning of July 24th and head north into the Napa Valley. Over the next seven days the group will ride through Eureka, Susanville, Le Vining and then over to Truckee and Lake Tahoe. They'll ride through Yosemite and down to Hollister, CA, the birthplace of the outlaw biker legend in the US. Then it's over to the coast and back up to San Francisco via the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, arriving on July 31st.

What was supposed to be a one time ride in 2004 has become an annual event that has raised over $200,000.00 for the two charities. For more information on the route, or making a donation, please visit www.LRLR.org .

Tue: load in of unknown rigging
Wed: load in of unknown lighting package
Thu: continued installation of unknown lighting, rigging and audio
Sat:  load in of unknown staging
Sun: continued installation of unknown staging
Mon: continued installation of unknown staging.  Focus of unknown lights. Rehearsal of unknown show.
Tue:  actual unknown show
Wed: actual 2nd unknown show followed by strike of staging, audio etc.
Thu: final strike for lighting and rigging.

The show went great!

Tête-à-Tête

I'm in need of rope for my outdoor venue. The ropes in question are used to secure our venue (tent and trussing structure) and have to be able to withstand weather, UV and have a high work load limit. I do not have too much information on my current ropes, but there are 8 which are roughly 70' long, 5/8" thick with a core and a braided jacket. I am unsure as to whether they are natural or synthetic. They are under constant use for four months straight and then are stored for the remainder of the year (until I pull them out again).

I'm looking for the best recommendation on what I could begin to replace them with, as some are showing signs of wear. I saw a couple of items on your catalog that looked promising, but any additional guidance from you would be most appreciated.

All of our ropes are made from Polyester (Dacron) and, as such, have a very high tolerance for UV (sunlight).  Nothing is impervious, however.  Depending on the amount of time in the sun you will need to inspect you ropes on a regular basis.  If you begin to see a white powder or residue on the surface of the rope, then it would be time to retire that rope from service.  You should get a number of years of service out of these ropes, but it will depend on how long they are exposed to UV.

I would think you would want a low stretch or possibly even a static rope to use as a tie down rope.  Our Stage Set X has the least amount of stretch followed closely by our Spectrum ShowBraid.  The Stage Set X, because it is a parallel core rope, is stiffer than the ShowBraid and may not take certain knots as well.  The ShowBraid has a double braid construction and is our best general purpose rope.

The working load limits of each rope are based on the diameter of the rope and are listed on the website.  You should check the WLL of each rope and chose the rope type and size that fits your needs.

Hope that helps.

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to pass you a note that I have been meaning to for some while. You visited us awhile back and quoted us on some new fall protection systems some time after that.

Although I have been told that the system in place is OSHA-compliant I have always felt rather unsafe working in the upstairs grid. After a lot of people told me it more than likely wouldn't happen, I am now hearing chatter of new fall protection systems being put in.

So just wanted to say thank you Bill. I know it must often feel like you are just doing your work to cover insurance policies and such - but from the end users, and the people out there that want to do the right things and be safe - Thank you. It so often feels like people with a good safety ethic have a red mark on them in this industry instead of it being a favorable employment quality. People like you ease those fears and make people realize that the entertainment industry and safety can play nicely after all.

What a great note.  Thanks!  I really appreciate your taking the time to write it.  While it doesn't always feel like we're part of an insurance policy, it's not often we hear from the people who get to use the equipment.

Being a rigger and having been in dangerous situations in the past, it is our mission to make sure that all of us are as safe as possible.  There really is no reason for taking risks at work.  You get to do that on your own time.
