SRI at Castleton Festival Opening
Sapsis
Rigging, Inc. provided the rigging package for the inaugural Castleton
Festival, held in Castleton, Virginia. The festival, which will be an
annual event, was held on the 550 acre estate of Lorin Maazel, who
finished his final concert as Music Director of the New York
Philharmonic a week before the start of Castleton.
Sapsis
Rigging provided a 6 legged ground support system for the main
performance venue, a 150' X 100' clear span tent. The 6 main trusses
each had a span of 50'. The venue played host to four fully staged
chamber operas by Benjamin Britton over the course of the month.
Mike
Sapsis, SRI supervisor for the event, commented while standing on
stage, "What a great place to hold a festival. The estate is beautiful
and the Virginia countryside provides a welcome change to city life in
the summertime".
The Castleton
Festival is designed to be a nurturing ground for young professional
artists and advanced students, who will live and work together over a
month-long period, primarily on the Castleton Farms property.

Long Reach Long Riders Ride Again by Bill Sapsis
The 6th annual LRLR ride has come to a close. The riders and chase car drivers are all safely home. It was a great ride. We raised over $42,000.00 which turned out to be our second best year ever for fund-raising. How cool is that? No small feat during a recession.
Every year the ride takes on it's own personality; a combination of the locale and the riders. Last year it was the mysticism and stark beauty of the desert in the southwest. This year it was the spirituality of the mountains and valleys of the southeast. The mountain roads we traveled this year also had a hand in shaping the ride. Believe me, I've seen enough curves and switchbacks to last me a while.
But, as with the previous rides, it's really the people that make the difference. This year's group was larger than ever and we all got along incredibly well. I think I will miss the mornings most of all. Just the simple act of getting the bikes ready for the day's ride took on a wonderful community spirit as we drank our morning coffee, shared stores and prepped the bikes. Just because we're all bike enthusiasts and theater technicians of one sort or another does not guarantee that we'll all get along. But we do. We look out for each other too, on the road and off.
So, with a tinge of sadness but some very fine memories, I say goodbye to ride # 6. My thanks go out to all of you, riders, chase car drivers, support staff and sponsors, for helping to make this such a wonderful event year after year.
Until next year in San Francisco.
Thanks Bill

Tête-à-Tête Where we answer your burning rigging questions.
Dear Uncle Bill I want to know if the "Locoloc" swage fittings you have are compatible with my HIT brand swaging tools. If so, should I use the HIT go-no-go gauge or the Locoloc gauge?
Signed, Better Safe than Sorry
Dear Better Safe- Great question! We recommend that swaging equipment, sleeves and gauges, etc. be kept within the same manufacturer. Slight differences between brands mean we cannot guarantee the effectiveness of the equipment if you mix different manufacturers.
I recommend that you use Locoloc fittings with a Locoloc crimping tool and check the crimps with a Locoloc gauge.
Meticulously Yours, Uncle Bill

Dear Uncle Bill We were wondering what would happen to 1/2 ton hoist if it was dropped from forty or fifty feet (assuming no one was underneath it.) Signed, Betty Poole

Grid Hoist Stand™
A problem-solving device that safely attaches a chain hoist to an
existing structure. The Hoist Grid Stand provides a secure
attachment of any manual or electric chain hoist to the theater grid steel.
With its wide footprint The Hoist Grid Stand evenly distributes
the weight of the load over a large area, helping prevent damage to
individual grid channels. In addition, it allows for the load to be dead-hung
from the stand, thereby taking the weight off the chain hoist, per
manufacturer specifications. As many grids do not have large openings
the The unit is bolted together, allowing it to be brought to the grid in
sections and assembled in place.
