Self Retracting Lifelines
Self retracting lifelines satisfy many needs in the entertainment business. Not only are they good for use with wire rope (truss) ladders, but they also work well with catwalk and grid access ladders.  When mounted on a horizontal lifeline with a trolley, the smaller web style self retracting lifeline removes the possibility of a fall, thereby eliminating the need for a rescue plan at that location.

However, these devices only work well when they have been positioned properly and, unfortunately, that is often not the case. A self retracting lifeline must always be above the technician who is using the device.  In addition, the device must be placed such that should the technician fall the technician can reach the ladder or catwalk or whatever he or she just fell from to affect a self rescue.  Many time, especially with wire rope ladders and truss access, the self retracting lifeline is hung from the face of the truss, allowing the technician, when climbing from the ladder to the truss, to be above the device.  This is a very dangerous condition and should not be allowed to happen.

For more information regarding the safe use of self retracting lifelines, please contact one of our fall arrest specialists here at Sapsis Rigging, Inc.

Thanks,
Uncle Bill
