The return of highly edible vegetables

This month marks the eagerly awaited return of the farmers markets. For customers seeking the freshest, local produce, Ranch Foods Direct is gearing up with a new program to offer more local produce this summer. Enjoy the convenience of shopping for local meats and produce all at one central location in Colorado Springs throughout the summer.

Super smooth barbecue

Known for the best cue around, Front Range Barbecue is a great place to go for Fathers Day or for other summer celebrations. Enjoy mouth-watering barbecue and live music. “We get a lot of requests for beef ribs, so that's something we plan to offer as a Father's Day menu special,” says owner Brian Fortinberry. “Barbecuing ribs is one of our specialties.

Local blues artist John Alex Mason plays every Sunday on our patio starting at about 5 p.m. until about 9.”

In fact, the Old Colorado City location features live music five nights a week. “We lean toward bluegrass, blues and folksy stuff but we'll do about anything,” Brian says. CLICK HERE to visit the Front Range Barbecue website and find an event calendar of live music… they've got great variety lined up at 2330 West Colorado Avenue, (719) 632-2596 (open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.) They also have an east-side location at 4935 Templeton Gap Road, (719) 598-8895, offering a special fried catfish night in addition to the best beef barbecue anywhere. That location is open seven days a week for lunch or dinner. And don't forget, they cater too.

Did you know?...  If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels every week, according to Steven L. Hopp in Barbara Kingsolver's new book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Spend misty mountain mornings at Mildred's

Mists were rising over the rain-glistening pine trees the morning we drove up to Cascade for breakfast at Mildred's, which opened last October and has served meat from Ranch Foods Direct ever since. Cozy and welcoming in the dim morning light, this old-fashioned lunch counter was getting ready to extend its hours for the summer season. Outside, the patio beckoned, full of brightly painted picnic tables. CLICK HERE to experience breakfast at Mildred's.

Evergreen market celebrates year of meats

In the August 2006 issue of this newsletter, we profiled the Blue Spruce Market in Evergreen, Colorado, the dream enterprise of Seth and Carol Miller, CLICK HERE. Now, this wonderfully unique market and deli is preparing to hold a week-long anniversary celebration June 4-9. On Saturday, June 9, customers will have a chance to sample Callicrate Beef from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. “We believe we have the best beef at Blue Spruce Market, Callicrate Beef. We invite you to sample some and chat with Mike Callicrate, an Evergreen native and independent cattle producer, business entrepreneur and political activist,” the Millers say.

“He serves as an outspoken leader in the industry supporting farmers and ranchers by offering them a higher price per head and bypassing the corporate-dominated processing industry.” The event is free. If you attend, you'll enjoy their beautiful demonstration kitchen, which they use for a variety of cooking classes. For all the details about the Blue Spruce Market, CLICK HERE to visit their website. Store hours: Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (303) 674-1445.

Dinner with the dream team

It was a dream dinner. Regrettably, no, we were not at Berkeley's famed Chez Panisse, consistently ranked among the country's very best restaurants. It was dreamy, not because of the fresh local greens that attested to the chef's culinary insight, or the opulent venue in the Beverly Hilton which each year plays host to the annual Golden Globe awards, but - and in truth this is almost always the case - because of the company.
