Buckeye Hills Honored

The Washington County Ohio State University Extension Office recently honored Buckeye Hills with a Key Supporter Award for work with its Community Development area.

siteBuckeye Hills Launches bhgis Program

Does your community have to rely on antique maps stored in tubes or the memories of key municipal or county staff as the resource for its critical infrastructure data? If you wish to get the details of your water, sewer, storm sewer, or other local utility data "out of the head" of employees and into a technology-based, user-friendly system for future use and prosperity, please read on!

Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District has been providing digital mapping (GIS) services to its eight-county region (Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Noble, Perry and Washington Counties) since the mid-1990s. Customized maps and data created by Buckeye Hills have been used to complete funding applications, studies, and countless other projects.

This high accuracy local data is becoming increasingly critical to a community's ability to secure grant funding from most state and federal programs. Potential business and industry site selectors are seeking this type of data as well.

Thanks to its GIS program, local governments have access to a wide variety of national, regional, state, and local GIS data, as well as Census and other information housed at the Buckeye Hills Data Center. GIS provides the valuable service of mapping a community's key infrastructures.

A new Community GIS Program - bhgis-is being made possible through grants from the Economic Development Association and The Appalachian Regional Commission. The Goal: To provide basic GPS data collection and custom GIS mapping services to communities with a population of fewer than 5,000 residents.

The program now makes these valuable GIS services available to the region's smaller communities in an affordable fashion. The first five eligible communities who respond will receive the bhgis program services. To learn more, please contact Bret Allphin, GIS Manager, at 740-374-9436.

MMH BelpreWashington County: Marietta Memorial Hospital Expansion Breaks Ground in Belpre

The Health Bridge Medical Park in Belpre was the scene of a groundbreaking celebration in November for the $12 million Marietta Memorial Hospital expansion. The Belpre facilities have seen a lot of growth over the past six years.

The expansion will include a 50,000-square-foot two-story building addition that will include urgent care facilities, an expansion of the current Strecker Cancer Center and physicians' offices.

Belpre Mayor Mike Lorentz said this project will change the footprint of Belpre with the expected growth of the now relatively open area.

Hartley

Hocking County: Owner of Southeastern Ohio Home Health Receives Award

Ruby Hartley, owner of Southeastern Ohio Home Health, was a local Ohio women business owners recognized by The Ohio Department of Development for her achievements.

From the time her business first began in May 2008, her business has grown to include 40 employees who provide home health care to clients, and has reached annual revenues in excess of $250,000.

"We provide skilled nursing services, home health aid service, physical therapy and occupational therapy," Hartley explained of her business. "We're a home health agency and we provide care in patients' homes. We are basically enabling them to stay in their home. Typically, they're not all necessarily homebound, but they often are, and we enable them to keep their independence in their home and not go to assisted living."

The 2010 Keys of Success Awards event is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Development's Entrepreneurship and Small Business Division, the Ohio Small Business Development Centers, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Central Ohio Women's Business Center, Key4Women/KeyBank, COSTCO, and The Women's Book
