Monroe County: Launches P-16 Council
Because emerging evidence suggests that the quality, size, and shape of school facilities themselves affect economic development, through the Education committee of Team Monroe, residents are working to coordinate and implement a P-16 program in Monroe County. The program is a strategy from the county's Strategic Higher Education Plan. A P-16 Council works to integrate the separate systems of education across all learning levels. By improving these connections, P-16 focuses on the needs of the students, ensuring they can advance smoothly from pre-Kindergarten to a post secondary education. The philosophy behind this approach is simple: success in college and in a career begins in pre-school. The Monroe Council is coordinating local leaders from every level of education, from business, communities and civic interests, as well as parents, to provide vision and leadership. Representatives forming The Monroe County P-16 Council included Pat Hendershot, Kindergarten Teacher at Skyvue Elementary; Polly Evans Teacher/Owner of St. Paul's Pre-School; Ruth Workman of The Monroe County Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Rebecca Kurtz of Belmont Technical College; Michael McTeague Associate Dean of Ohio University and Tim Houston of Belmont Technical College. Many others are also engaged in the Monroe County endeavor. |
