October Ohio Unemployment Rates Up from Last Month
 
Ohio's unemployment rate
was 7.3 percent in October, up slightly from 7.2 percent in September according to the latest state figures.

The October unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 5.7 percent in October 2007.


Rates in the region:
Athens: 6.8%  
Hocking:  7.9%
Meigs: 10.1% 
Monroe: 9.2%
Morgan: 9.4%
Noble: 9.3%
Perry: 8.5%
Washington: 5.4%

Buckeye Hills Attends Regional Legislative Event

The Eastern Ohio Development Association's (EODA) Legislative Forum was held Nov. 21 near Cambridge. Featured were several new and returning Ohio legislators as well as representatives from a variety of state and federal legislators and organizations.

EODA consists of 16 counties in Eastern and SE Ohio and was formed to promote the economic growth of the region. Topics included discussion on trasportation/infrastructure planning, the affordability of higher education, energy, health care, and others as well as reports from the following Ohio departments: ODOT, ODNR, Ohio EPA, Tourism, Treasurer's Office, Agriculture and the Governor's Office of Appalachia. Garrison Selected to Serve in 128th House Leadership
GarrisonOhio's legislators have completed the selection of new leadership in the House and the Senate for the upcoming 128th General Assembly that will begin next January.

State Representative Jennifer Garrison (D-93rd District) is serving her second term on behalf of her constituents in Guernsey, Monroe and Noble Counties, and parts of Washington and Muskingum Counties. Garrison has been selected to serve as the Majority Floor Leader for the 128th General Assembly.

The Cincinnati-area native and daughter of a union plumber earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Xavier University. She then received her law degree from Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C.

She also serves as Ranking Member of the House Public Utilities and Energy Committee, and she also sits on the Education Committee, the Finance and Appropriations Committee, and the Primary and Secondary Education Subcommittee.

Buckeye Hills Joins Transportation MATTERS Collaborative

Transportation MATTERS, the broad-based, statewide coalition actively advocating for improving and expanding Ohio's transportation system. The need for investment in Ohio's transportation system has never been greater. Funding and financing options are critical to the Ohio's future success.

Ohio Senator Tim Schaffer Visits Perry County PASSPORT Client

The popular PASSPORT program that allows elderly Ohioans to receive less-expensive care in the comfort of their own homes is making a difference to one Perry County family.

SchafferBuckeye Hills (AAA8) Area Agency on Aging and its provider Cambridge Home Health hosted a home visit with a PASSPORT Client in Perry County last month. Ohio Senator Tim Schaffer took time to visit with Dannie Dyer in his home in New Lexington.

Dyer is 66 and enjoys being able to stay in the comfort of his home because of equipment and home care services provided through PASSPORT. 
 
AAA8 Hosts 2008 Choices Expo

The Buckeye Hills (AAA8) Area Agency on Aging hosted its second annual Choices Expo at the Marietta Comfort Inn Nov. 12-13 Over 300 attended to receive a wealth of information about healthy lifestyles, long-term care options, caregiver services, basic health screenings, workshops about retirement planning and much more. Mark your calendars for next year's one-day event: Nov. 12, 2009!

Morgan County: McCort Retires as Village Administrator
 
John McCort is retiring as Village Administrator for the Village of McConnelsville.  Bill Morgan his replacement will start December 15. 

Washington County: Ohio 7 North Commerce Park Announced

On Nov. 7, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted for The Seven North Commerce Park in Reno. The 24-acre park could generate 100-150 jobs. Mike Jacoby, executive director of the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority worked on the public/private partnership with Marietta-based Triad Resources.
 
Washington County and the City of Marietta secured grants and funds to bring power and utilities to the park. A consortium of local banks also supported the project.
