Healthy U Program Leaders Needed to Promote Healthy Aging

Does helping others inspire you? Then we need you! The Area Agency on Aging has received a grant to pay "lay" leaders for their time to become a trained leader for the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program - Healthy U.

A Healthy U leader must be a health professional and/or an individual with a chronic disease. Program participants are adults with chronic diseases that are interested in learning how to control their pain and symptoms.

The Administration on Aging and the National Council on Aging recommend this evidence-based program that is proven to improve the quality of life for people with a chronic disease.

So, if you're interested in helping others take control of a chronic disease and improve their quality of life, call today to learn more.

The training takes only 4 days and you will be paid for your training time. In addition, you would be paid for each six-week course that you instruct in the communities selected. The dates for the training are Feb. 19, 21, 26, 28 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

For more information on the Healthy U training program, contact Cathy Ash, LSW, at AAA8 740-373-6400 or 1-800-331-2644.

aarp_mtgA variety of representatives from Marietta attended the launch of the AARP Livable Communities Committee meeting Jan. 22 at the AAA8 office in Marietta to discuss the assets and challenges facing the city as it prepares to accomodate the growth of the city's aging population.

Pictured from left to right are: Terry Zdrale Exec. Director of the O'Neill Senior Center; Misty Casto Exec. Director of Buckeye Hills' AAA8; AARP's Rebecca Wheeler-Grieve and Marietta Mayor Michael "Moon" Mullen.

As he welcomed guests, Mayor Mullen shared, "This is not just a project, it is a process for enhancing the quality of life and an effort for sustainability of support services and access to critical community resources."

AARP representative Rebecca Wheeler-Grieve reviewed the components of a "livable community" that include:
  • affordable and accessible housing;
  • multiple transportation options and mobility features;
  • supportive services and
  • opportunities to engage in community life.

"AARP's commitment is to helping communities ensure their citizens have the options they need to age with dignity and choice," said Wheeler-Grieve. "The AARP process encourages identifying offerings and needs to show gaps as a community seeks to address the tidal wave of Boomers."

AARP provided initial results of its telephone survey that included more than 800 Marietta residents 45+. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting initiative in Southeast Ohio.

Diabetes costs nation $174 billion annually

For Congressman Zack Space (D-Dover), the disease of diabetes is a very personal issue - it afflicts his 17-year-old son. But Space cites a new report as evidence that diabetes carries a massive financial cost for the nation, and says more of a federal investment is needed to fight it.

Space attended a congressional briefing where the American Diabetes Association released a report pegging the annual pricetag of diabetes and related complications at $174 billion nationally.
Those are "war-like" spending numbers, Space said. If the federal government just spent a fraction of that amount on increased research and funding for diabetes treatment initiatives at places like the
National Institutes of Health, "in the end we could save trillions of dollars," Space said.
