Greetings! ,
The four friends couldn't carry the paralyzed man through the crowd, so they tore off part of the roof above where Jesus was. When they had made an opening, they lowered the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying.
Mark 2: 4
There is nothing more frustrating than a locked door, closed road, long line, or other barrier that keeps you from going somewhere. I hate to go to a store, restaurant, or even a church and find that the doors are closed and you cannot go into the building. I was recently driving on Dundee Road toward Wheeling and saw the sign that announced that the street would be closed for 8-10 days due to reconstruction of the railroad crossing. I immediately wondered how I would I travel east with the closure. Would I use Hintz, Lake Cook, or some other road I have yet to discover? I know some of you are concerned about the Dundee closure and its impact on your daily travel plans. Barriers can be very challenging.
Chapter 2 of the Gospel of Mark reminds us that barriers and roadblocks have long faced God's people. Jesus is talking to a large crowd when four friends bring their dear, sick friend for healing. The crowd is so large that it becomes impossible for them to move forward with their faithful journey of restoration. Some would have given up, but not these. They go onto the roof and remove part of it so they can lower their friend for healing. What a story of faith!
Now I am not advocating jumping the road barriers on Dundee, but we along with others in our community face barriers all the time. They may be personal barriers of fear, addiction, job loss, relationships, or vocation challenges. The barriers may be larger like poverty, racism, injustice, exclusion, homelessness, violence, etc. We can find ourselves paralyzed as we face the inability to move forward. Join us Sunday for worship at 9:00am and 10:30am as we explore the facing and overcoming of barriers in our lives and our world. I look forward to seeing you at Kingswood!
In Christ,
Pastor James

Mission Trip Team Uplifts Hearts in North Carolina
The Kingswood UMC Mission Trip Team sent an updated report today about their outreach and service work in Vandemere, North Carolina. The team traveled and arrived safely on Saturday and Sunday. Work began on Monday to repair and remodel two homes effected by Hurricane Irene.
A third home work-site began today.
The crew has done painting, bathroom installation, drywall, taping/mudding, window installation, light construction, and more. Today, a small group helped a woman visit a family member she had not seen in three months.
In addition to all the hard work, the team has enjoyed great meals, good fellowship, great devotions and worship, and a special improv night. The team begins their trip home on Saturday and will return Sunday afternoon. Please be in daily prayer as they share God's love, uplift hearts, and indeed, change the world. |

KUMC Book Club
The next meeting of the KUMC book club is on Friday, August 10 at 7 pm at Panera Bread. The book club will discuss Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo.
Strategically located on the road to Mumbai's glittering airport and luxury hotels is a giant billboard advertising floor tiles that stay beautiful forever. The billboard hides Annawadi, a
makeshift squatter's slum that is home to some of India's
poorest citizens. Boo sensitively follows the lives of three
Annawadi families and a cluster of orphaned boys as they scrape out a living sorting trash and other grueling labors.
For three years, journalist Katherine Boo lived among
Annawadi's residents, sharing their lives, hopes and heartbreaks as they sought to climb out of poverty and into India's burgeoning middle class. Written in the narrative non-fiction form, Boo gives life to the human spirit and heroic struggles of the uneducated and desperately poor.

NEW Hand Mime Ministry Team Opportunity!
Hand Mime is the acting out of a song or story in blacklight, by forming words and images utilizing only the presenters' fluorescent gloved hands. Hand Mime is not sign language. Watch this video to view Glory Finger's Hand Mime presentation of Amazing Grace. http://vimeo.com/15782291.
I would like to invite you to help start a new ministry team. For now we'll call it the Kingswood
Hand Mime Team. Everyone 16 years and older is invited to help us form this new team.
The first get together will be Sunday August 19, 2012 at 11:45am in room 122. I will choose a practice day and time based on the participant's availability. I would like to meet once per week for about 1.5 hours. Email sheribrubeck@comcast.net for any questions. |

There will be a sign up sheet all month for opportunities to work in the booth. Volunteering in the booth is also a great chance to extend the welcome and hospitality of the Kingswwod family outside our doors! Questions? Call Debbie Kob
