Luke PepperA Word from the Pastor

Greetings!

Luke's History Lesson for this Week:

The term "Bully Pulpit" is often used now to refer to the power of a president or a political figure to use their position to advocate for a particular cause, program, or issue.

Merriam-Webster defines the Bully Pulpit as:

"a prominent public position (as a political office) that provides an opportunity for expounding one's views"...."Bully pulpit" comes from the 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt, who observed that the White House was a bully pulpit. For Roosevelt, "bully" was an adjective meaning "excellent" or "first-rate" -- not the noun "bully" that's so common today."

For the next three Sundays, Kingswood UMC will have a sermon series on the topic of Bullying and how the Church should respond to the abuse and isolation that is experienced when bullying occurs. You will in fact be hearing from the Pulpit about Bullying. In other words, the bully pulpit of the Church will be used to advocate for a Christian response to the bullying we see in our schools and nation. Please join us for the next three Sundays as we pray and worship together for a more peaceful, just, and loving world.

Peace,

Luke Pepper, Minister of Adult and Youth Formation

KUMC Book Club

January Meeting

The next meeting of the  KUMC book club will be on Friday, January  20  at 7 pm  at Panera Bread, Strathmore Center, 1228 West Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove.  The book club will discuss "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkenson.

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

The Food Pantry Needs Your Help

Due to very heavy usage in December, the Kingswood Emergency Food Pantry needs three things:  food, funding and paper grocery bags, preferably with handles.  If you can help, please bring these items to Kingswood this month.  Food and bags can be left in the blue bins in the coatroom, while monetary donations can be left in the office.  Our current food needs are: soup, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, vegetables, applesauce, pasta, spaghetti sauce, rice, dried pinto beans, cooking oil, cereal and macaroni and cheese.

Thank you, as always, for your support of this mercy ministry!

Jim & Cheryl Gibson, Food Pantry Coordinators
