Greetings!

United by Prayer: Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

In last Sunday's bulletin as well as the bulletin for this upcoming Sunday you will find an insert filled with daily devotions concerning the theme of Christian Unity. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, usually held in January, was started by the World Council of Churches. This week addresses the reality of social, political, and organizational divisions that exist between the many Christian denominations while promoting opportunities to come to together as Christians, as a people who are united by the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Although pulpit exchanges, joint communion services, seminars, and forums will be held all throughout the world in January, what is most important and interesting for me is that prayer is at the center of this movement. At the same time that we pray for unity among Christians we recognize that we are united in the fact that we pray to the same God in Jesus Christ. Prayer, as a means to which we experience the grace of God, is then the perfect way for us to seek unity. When denominations spar over who can receive and officiate over the sacraments and even how many sacraments there actually are, it is prayer that we all share in common.

I invite you then, the next time you pray, to pray for unity in serving Christ in this world; knowing that you are joined in prayer by people of all different denominations, ages, races, nationalities, and genders. Pray that as you work with, go to school with, and meet other Christians you may find ways to share the love of Christ that we hold in common.

Peace,

Luke Pepper, Minister of Adult and Youth Formation

In January, Kingswood members are urged to join many of our brothers and sisters around the world in celebrating a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity We will focus on the spiritual unity of Christ's world-wide church. The growing church remained united until a political rupture divided it into the Orthodox east and the Catholic west, which further divided in the Reformation into Lutheran, Reformed and Anglican churches that tragically continued subdividing into hundreds of denominations. Western Protestant and eastern Orthodox churches founded the World Council of Churches after World War II. We pray during this week that the unity we have in Jesus Christ may be lived out by Christians all around the world. For the next two weeks bulletin inserts with daily prayers will be distributed.

KUMC Book Club

January Meeting

The next meeting of the  KUMC book club will be on Friday, January  20  at 7 pm  at Panera Bread, Strathmore Center, 1228 West Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove.  The book club will discuss "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkenson.

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.
