A Word from the Pastor
Greetings!
It has been a delight to see the collection of Nativity Sets growing in the library window. This week included the addition of the banners shown above, crafted by Valerie Koppenhaver especially for this display. Others have contributed nativity scenes they've brought home from other places. Nancy Neal is sharing the one she found in Israel to remember our visit to a Bedoin camp last spring. Others come from the wood working shop of Dick Stone ... a cross, the large wooden one with lights, a cut out one, and the two small ones that his grandsons made a few years ago during the craft activity on the night of the Christmas program. By the way, that is the project for this year, too. We are grateful for all who have shared and hope everyone will get to look in the window when they are here on Sunday.
When we think of a nativity, we think of the birth of Jesus. But more generally, nativity refers to the place of birth. One could ask another person about their nativity, or place of birth. How one describes one's nativity might be as revealing as the question counselors often ask in the first session, tell me about your earliest memory. What we remember from our birth depends on what we've been told. What we remember of a first memory is often a mixture of what we've been told and some moment we actually remember ... when we began to know we could hold on to experiences in our mind and bring them back. That is another kind of nativity or birth ... the birth of mind and conscious memory.
As a community of those who follow Jesus, we have a collective memory that involves a mixture of what we've been told ... in scripture, from parents, family, teachers, the media ... and what we've actually experienced of God's being with us, Emmanuel. Many of us, as individuals, may not have had that experience in a church ... but all of us know the intake of breath and sense of awe when we recognize we are not alone in the universe but held and guided by a powerful presence and love. It is always a surprise. And a mystery. And a mercy. And really hard to talk about. And so we have this story of a baby in a manger in a strange place after an arduous journey ... and the presence of God even there. It is a story that expresses our deepest knowing ... and gives us a way to say what we know. God is with us. Emmanuel!!
Blessings on all as we move toward Bethlehem!!!!

Many Thanks!
THANKS TO ALL who brought Gifts for "All God's Children" last Sunday. Gifts for 240 children ... @ $50 each ... means that in addition to your generous support of Kingswood through the budget and gifts to the Food Pantry, you've provided at least $12,000 worth of gifts to children in our community. THANK YOU especially to the Forsythe family who work together to organize this important ministry ... with Jean offering the vision and energy that makes it happen every year.

KUMC Book Club
January Meeting
The next meeting of the KUMC book club will be on Friday, January 20 at 7 pm at Panera Bread, Strathmore Center, 1228 West Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove. The book club will discuss "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkenson.

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.
