August 4, 2011

Greetings!

Thoughts from the Pastor

  Is it true?.......

I've been listening to a series of DVDs of sermons and lectures from the 2011 Festival of Homiletics held in Minneapolis this spring.   It is an annual conference of preaching for preachers held every May and the speakers are the best preachers, and teachers of preachers, from across the country.  One of the lecturers suggests that the question that everyone comes to worship with each week is this one:  "Is it true?"  Is it true that God is love and I am loved by God?  Is it true that I can know God through a relatioship with Jesus Christ?  Is it true that Jesus was raised from the dead and that makes a difference for our lives?  Is it true that the church is Christ's body in the world today?

So I've been wondering, is it true?  Is it true that this is your core question?

Certainly we all come to worship and life in the community of faith with different needs and hopes and questions.  But too often we just pay attention to the surface questions ... will the sermon be interesting?  will the music be something the speaks to me?  will Joe or Jenny or Jimmy be there and be friendly?  will we get out on time?

But I invite you to think at a deeper level about what yearning in your heart brings you to worship each week?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Blessings!!!!
Rev. Margaret Gramley

Interfaith Summer Reading Group - The Faith Club

18 persons from Kingswood, Beth Am and Temple Chai gathered last week for the first of what may be a series of discussions of the book The Faith Club by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner.  We risked asking each other some hard questions and listened to hear what was hard in the asking as well as to begin answering the questions.  One person asked:  do you (Christians) blame us (Jews) for killing Jesus.  That isn't fair!!!!   Another asked, what does the crucifixion mean and if you eat the body and blood, isn't that like cannibalism?  Whew!!!   We discussed these last night and decided we had only begun so will gather again on August 24.  Questions we've identified to discuss so far are:  how do Jews in the US relate to Zionism? and what is the deal with Jews being "chosen?"

So ... if you didn't finish the book (most hadn't in the discussion last week), keep going and join the conversation on August 24 at 7pm at Beth Am.
