hosanna in the highest

April 14, 2011

Greetings!

A Word from the Pastor

Palm tree near the Jordan River
Palm tree near Jordan River

As we traveled throughout Israel we saw fields and fields of palm trees.  This is a picture of a date palm that was in a field of palms just outside the entrance to the Baptismal site on the Jordan River ... a site used to remember that Jesus came to John at the Jordan River and was baptized.

This Sunday we'll remember that the crowds who gathered to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem picked up palm branches to wave as they shouted "Hosanna" or "save us."  The people of Israel who followed Jesus were hoping to be "saved" from the Roman Empire and its power and control in their lives.  We tend to think of being saved as something more personal ... save me from my sins.  But maybe this year as we wave the palms, perhaps we can also think about what freedoms we yearn for as a people.  Where are we caught in cultural pressures that leave us more afraid than free?  How does welcoming Jesus into our communities give us hope and challenge us to a new way of being in the world?
