A Word from the Pastor

The Lord is my shepherd ....

One of the most familiar and popular pieces of scripture, read at nearly every funeral, shared with those who are sick, memorized by children in many languages, the 23rd Psalm is part of the wallpaper of our Christian tradition and practice.  It is just there and it enhances the environment.  But like wallpaper, it is easy to not really notice or think about it because it is just so darned familiar.   But during Lent this year, we're going to make an effort to not only notice but to go deeper into what these beautiful images and statements about God really mean to us:
  • It is part of the Jewish worship book ... the Book of Psalms.  What does it mean to us as Christians?
  • It is filled with pastoral images ... what does that mean to us as urban folk?
  • It is a classic statement of faith in God ... to what contemporary realities does it speak?

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

That is the first line ... and the focus of our reflections on the first Sunday of Lent.  We'll put it in conversation with the "temptations of Jesus" and see how they speak to
each other and to us today.

And remember "time changes" on Sunday .... we move into Daylight Savings Time this weekend.   Though it doesn't mean we really get an extra hour in the evening or lose an hour in the morning, I love the idea that time is not as rigid as we tend to think ... that we can experience it differently.  That is what I hope we also experience every time we observe the Sabbath by coming to worship.  As the blessed children and creation of God, we live in a different time than clock time -- kairos time -- a time where the Lord invites us to "lay down in green pastures to be restored" ... to rest in God's care and love.

Lenten Studies

Lenten Study led by Rev. Sang Hun Han

Tuesdays, March 15 through April 19 at 7pm in the Library

Thursdays, March 17 through April 21 at 10am in room 115

 Sign up this Sunday.

Walk with Jesus on his final day. Sit beside him at the Last Supper. Pray

with him in Gethsemane. Follow him to the cross. Desert him. Deny him.

Experience the Resurrection. This class is to help you better understand the

events that occurred during the last 24 hours of Jesus' life, see more

clearly the theological significance of Christ's suffering and death, and

reflect upon the meaning of these events for your life.

No single event in human history has received more attention than the

suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. The book we'll study, 24

Hours That Changed the World, by Adam Hamilton, is designed to help you experience and understand the significance of Jesus' suffering and death in a way you never have before.

Whether you are a longtime Christian or simply curious about the story of

Christ's crucifixion, you are invited to join us on this inspiring journey.

Sunday mornings, 3/27, 4/3,10,17 Beth Jayapalan will lead a study at 9am.

  Senior High Sunday School

Come join us in Sunday School for lively conversations about our beliefs. This Sunday, March 13 we have invited a guest to share with us her thoughts about:

What does it mean to be Muslim?

We have asked her to start with these questions...

*What do we believe?

*What do we have in common?

*Why do we focus on the differences?

*Why so much trouble in the Middle East and Israel in particular?

Please come and help us to warmly welcome our guest who has graciously agreed to join us for this discussion. Invite your friends too!

Also join us on the following weeks:

March 20:     What does it mean to be Jewish?
March 27:     What does it mean to be Christian?

Hope to see you soon.

 Ash Wednesday

The confirmands burned palms from last year to make the ashes for Wednesday's services.

Ed Nickow

Ed Nickow from Temple Chai sounded the Shofar during Wednesday evening's Ash Wednesday Service.

Ed Nickow

Nickow described to the congregation the different sounds of the shofar which are typically blown on the Jewish High Holy Days.

The first sound was "to wake people up" and another sound was to "break up our shortcomings and bring about repentance" he explained.

Meals on Wheels Thanks!

Hello to all the February Church drivers!!!

Wheeling Township is so very fortunate to have a wonderful partnership with St. Thomas Becket, Arlington Countryside and Kingswood United Methodist Churches.  We know that during February three of our largest routes will have excellent service.

This year a meals on wheels program closed in Mt. Prospect.  Funding was not there to have a coordinator so they closed the program down.

We picked up 23 new clients.  We would not have been able to do that without the support of the 27 churches who deliver each month of the year.

Again, thank you!

Sincerely,

Chris Guth
