  March 3, 2011

Greetings!

Ash Wednesday is March 9, and there will be services in the sanctuary at 7am and 7pm on that day.   The service in the morning will be a simple time of prayer and the offering of ashes.

At 7pm, the service will begin with the reading from the second chapter of Joel .... blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill.  We'll be blessed with the presence of Ed Nicko, the Vice President for Worship at Temple Chai, who will bring their  (the traditional trumpet) used in the High Holy Days, and play it for us to call us to this time of worship and season of repentance.

There will also be time for prayer and singing, the chancel choir and the reading of scripture and a message, and the service of ashes.   This "rite" is a reminder that we come from dust and will return to it.  Ashes are made in a sign of the cross on the foreheads or hands of those who wish to come forward.

The ashes ... symbolically ... are burned from the palms from last year's Palm Sunday parade ... when all were eager to proclaim Jesus as King.  And the meaning has to do with how our shouts of hosanna are too quickly turned to cries of "cruicify him" ... fickle human beings that we are.  It is a fitting way to begin this season of turning toward God, of repentance and prayer

A Word from the Pastor

The last in our God at the Movies Series does not focus on a blockbuster or winner of Academy awards.  It's a movie most of you won't have seen ... and if you decide to see it, I'd encourage you to watch it yourselves before asking your kids to join you.  It raises all kinds of questions that you may want to think about before you make it a family affair.  And there are a couple of pretty graphic scenes.  But The Apostle, a project of Robert Duvall who stars in this film, is a great film to conclude our series as we prepare for the beginning of Lent next week.

Sonny Dewey is a Holiness preacher in Texas and a popular and successful evangelist across the south, when his marriage falls apart.  His reaction to not being able to have his way is devastating and deadly and he runs across state lines to avoid the questions of the police.  But he's an evangelist at heart and can't help but start another church .... this time in Louisiana in a poor black community under the tutelage and care of a retired pastor.  Now known as the Apostle E.F., his efforts transform this little community ... even as he is refined and healed along the way.  It is a story of transfiguration .... even as we'll hear the gospel telling of Jesus on the mountaintop this week.  The vernacular ... of southern Holiness Christians ... may make us uncomfortable, but it is the same story we tell and seek to live as we let God guide and heal us day by day.

Practice Makes Perfect

Feb. 11-13, I went on the Ski Trip with our senior high youth group at Wesley Woods, where we stayed two nights with other church youth groups. On Saturday, all of us were on the snow with skis or snowboards.

Actually, this was my second time skiing. I wasn't sure that my body remembered how to ski. Five years ago, one of my friends asked me to go to the mountains without any ski lessons. I was terrified and kept falling down. I really wanted to give up skiing in the morning, but in the afternoon another friend willingly taught me how to ski little by little. That lesson helped me a lot to take a risk again. I wasn't quite confident that I could ski on the slopes. When I came down, I was scared but I knew how to stop and how to get up when I fell down. I came to know that skiing is a whole different world. This time, I had an idea that my muscles would remember the skiing skills that I learned from my good friend.

When I put on the boots, they were so tight. But I carried on and went to ski. It was so slippery, and hard to walk and balance. For this reason, I took a lesson from a ski instructor. He taught us how to walk side steps and how to turn and stop. We practiced several times on the beginner slope. And then he let us to go to the ski lift. I went to the top of the mountain. I was standing there and ready to come down. I was afraid that people would be able to hear my heart beating. But all of my doubt and fear were gone once I started off. I enjoyed skiing around beautiful nature, people, and the weather. It was real fun to ski with our youth group. Through the ski trip, I realized that learning a new thing is not easy, but practice makes perfect, accompanied with enjoyment and refreshment.

As we enter the Lenten Season next week, we need to have spiritual practices that help us be close to God. In this season, we can learn and reflect on the suffering and the death of Jesus through lots of practice. I hope that the 40 days of the Lenten season will be a meaningful time for all of us to experience the presence of God in our daily life. As John Wesley confessed before he died that "the best of all, God is with us", we also boldly proclaim what Wesley said when our turn comes. In this Lenten Season, may God continue to bless your journey and give you hope and eternal joy through your spiritual practices!
