Rev. Margaret Gramley  Greetings!

God at the Movies ....

I was still in high school I think when I met Maria von Trapp.  I only knew her story through the stage production ... and the music.   The movie wouldn't come out for another 3 or 4 years.   I remember relating particularly to the "I am 16 Going on 17" song.  (I'm thinking I must have been 16 at the time.)
My aunt had invited me to join her at a luncheon where Maria was to be the honored guest and speaker.    Anyway ... Maria von Trapp wasn't anything like I expected.  She was nothing like Mary Martin ... who'd played the part on Broadway.  She was, of course, older ... a kindly, gentle woman who'd brought some of her grandchildren with her to sing.

I don't remember much of what she said ... but I do remember having the a-ha realization that people we know in their later life often have amazing stories to tell, and that their story doesn't end when the play, or movie, or book is written.  For a sixteen year old that was a revelation.

This week in worship, we'll hear some of the songs, and we'll engage the story of Maria. But we'll also pay attention to the context of this story ... of the Nazi invasion of Austria and the challenge that was to the Austrian people.  In these days as we see the movements for freedom in the MIddle East, we are reminded of the courage and convictions of those seeking a better life for themselves and their people, and that the story goes on.

Our last movie of these series isThe Apostle (for March 6)  as we travel with a man of God running from the law.

Companions on the Journey

Thank you to all the ladies who came out on the slippery roads to join us for our meeting on Monday.

Twenty eight of shared spiritual deepening through singing, focusing on prayer and prayer cards.

We also heard about "de-cluttering" and creating a peaceful space for an everyday living focus. Throughout the meeting we sampled wonderful polenta ( the recipe of the month) which Mary Ann and Anita made along with other appetizers, sweets and sparkling water.

We hope you will join us next time  - Monday, March 21!  If you haven't attended before please give it try, we'd love to have you.
