Rev. Margaret Gramley  Greetings!

God at the Movies ....

What is worthy of your life?

Our film this week shows the way that two quite different men invested their lives.  Both are runners ... members of the British Team and winners of Gold Medals in the 1924 Olympics in Paris.  Both know that it takes both God given talent and hard, hard work and determination to achieve their goals.

Harold Abrahams is the son of a Lithuanian Jew, a financier, who is determined his sons will be fully accomplished Englishmen.  Harold's brother is a doctor and Harold is just beginning his first year at Caius College at Cambridge.  But Harold can feel the anti-Semitism there and all around him.  The trouble with England, he says, is that it is Christian and Anglo-Saxon.  He doesn't even imagine just toughing it out .. he plans to "run them off their feet."

Eric Liddell is the son of a Scottish missionary to China.  In fact, Eric and his siblings were born there.  We meet them on a rare visit to the Scottish Highlands where Eric gets the privilege of handing out the prizes for the foot races based on his popularity as a rugby player.  He believes his call is to go back to China with his family and run the mission there ... but "God has made me fast," he says, " and when I run I feel his pleasure."  So he stays to train for the Olympics because he wants all the world to know that he is doing this for the honoring of God.

What is it that motivates your life?  Is it to prove that you're good enough ... or as good as the others?  Or is it to use and show forth the gifts God has given you for the benefit of country or college or family or King/Queen?  (This is a British film, by the way!!!)  Or is it something else?  How does that motivation influence what you do and how you do it?

These are the questions we'll engage this week as we consider this film and Paul's witness to us in Philippians:

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do:  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

If you want to see this movie, we'll be showing it at church on Saturday night this week ... February 19 ... at 7pm.  It is a BYOPC kind of party ... Bring Your Own Pop Corn!!!

Otherwise, we'll hope to see you Sunday!!!

Rev. Margaret Gramley

And for the next couple of weeks ....

 Sound of Music (for Feb 27)  we'll experience Maria running from love at first and then the von Trapp family running from the Nazi's;

The Apostle (for March 6) we travel with a man of God running from the law.

Laugh Lessons

Confirmands and adults got to laughing Wednesday evening.

Diane Tiemann, of the Community Nursing Program at Alexian Brothers, got the group chuckling by leading everyone in some "goofy" exercises such as acting like monkeys, knee slapping and belting out a few Santa like "ho-ho-ho's".  Tiemann says laughter aerobics can have many health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, decreasing muscle tension and relieving stress.

Tiemann says 3-5 minutes of good belly laughing is equal to 3 minutes of aerobic activity.

After 30 minutes of laughing exercises, many in the group said they felt "energized, invigorated and more relaxed".  Plus, it was a lot more fun than working out at the gym!

Did you know?

·a child laughs 400x a day

·an adult laughs 17x a day

·women laugh more than men

·there are more than 6,000 laughter clubs in 60 different countries
