Kingswood Connected

  February 10, 2011
Rev. Margaret Gramley  Greetings!

God at the Movies ....

Kingswood has a long history of "movie groups" .... circles of friends who regularly go to the movie theater and then spend some time reflecting on "where God is" in the film.

And recently, we've had some fun "movie nights" ... showing classic films in the Activity Center or Fireside Room and gathering around food and film and friendship to enjoy ... and sometimes even sing along.

For the next few weeks we'll be considering "God at the movies" in our worship services, putting a film in dialogue with scripture, the traditions of the church and with our own experience ... with the gospel of God's love.  Understanding these films, as expressions ... and in some cases, icons ... of our culture, we'll stand at the intersection of faith and culture and see what we can see.

This week it's Forrest Gump. Remember that it begins with Tom Hanks' character offering a piece of chocolate to the woman sharing the bus stop bench with him and saying,  "My momma always says that life is like a box of chocolates ... you never know what you're going to get."  That pattern of wisdom sayings... "my momma always says..." repeats throughout the film ... and is one expression of the faith that guides Forrest throughout his life. But there are others. If you get a chance to see this film, watch for them.

A theme that runs throughout all of the movies we'll see has to do with running ....
Gump runs in response to pain and fear and it takes him a long way;
in Chariots of Fire (for February 20) we meet runners from the 1924 Olympics in Paris;
in Sound of Music (for Feb 27)  we'll experience Maria running from love at first and then the von Trapp family running from the Nazi's;
and in The Apostle (for March 6) we travel with a man of God running from the law.

I'm not sure what all that running means ... but let's pay attention together as we consider Paul's question and admonition in First Corinthians 9:24 ...
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize.  These films offer various images of the prize ... but all invite us to live in a way that is true to God's love and grace ... the best in each of us and in the world.  Let's see what we can see .....

Katie Traynor

Katie's Scholarship

The Traynor family has started a scholarship fund in memory of their daughter Katie who tragically died in a boating accident last Labor Day weekend. "We are thrilled to be able to help someone else do what Katie loved," said Cindy Traynor.

Katie's scholarship is for an out of state Purdue nursing student. The Traynor's have guaranteed at least two thousand dollars a year, however as the fund grows, so will the scholarship.

"Kate worked so hard for those RN letters after her name, and we want to help someone else do the same. Work hard, Play hard...that was her mantra. She loved being a nurse and would be so proud to be helping someone else," said Cindy. "Thank you for all your support."

To make donations to the fund, you can go to  www.cfglaf.org or send a donation to The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette, 1114 East State Street, Lafayette, IN 47905-1219 and note Katie Traynor Scholarship Fund. If you donate something online, make sure you note

Kates Fund, or it will just go to the General Community Fund. If you go through paypal, put a note in the Endowment Fund note area before you check out.

"Thank you so much for helping us to remember Kate. Hopefully she is shining down on you during this dreary time of year!"
