 Greetings!o
Go Bears!!!!! Go Packers!!!
What an exciting turn of events!!! Who knew? Bears and Packers matched up in the playoffs for a spot at the Superbowl!!! Some are saying that THIS is the game of the century. I know some of you have tickets and will get to see the events of the day from the sidelines in Soldiers Field. Others of you are likely making plans of where you'll watch the game ... in your home with friends, at your favorite sports bar, at work sneaking peeks on your phone. Some of us have even adjusted our schedules ... (delaying the start of a new class and Praise Worship to later on Sunday) ... so we won't have to miss it.
It is so fun to be part of a team, even if our participation is as spectators. And it is even more fun when it is a winning team. But I'm thinking that it is the game itself that is the real draw .... the skill, the strategy, the rules, the hope, the fear, the courage, the discipline, the real people who enter into the game and make it come alive. Someone said in worship last Sunday that they hope football (with all its violence) isn't a metaphor for who we are as Americans. I don't know about that. But I do know that the deeper draw to it isn't the violence as much as becoming a part of the vision of a game well and fairly played between teams prepared and committed to the goal of playing their best and giving their all.
In some ways you might think of it as a metaphor for the spiritual life ... requiring that we enter into it without knowing the outcome, prepared and committed, giving our best, giving our all.
Enjoy!!!!
Rev. Margaret Gramley

Reluctant Pilgrim: A Moody, Somewhat Self-Indulgent Introvert's Search for Spiritual Community by Enuma Okoro is the first book in our the Winter Interfaith Conversations with Beth Am. We'll begin at Kingswood on Feburary 2. This book is a memoir of Okoro's journey from child faith to adult questions and faith in those questions and God's presence in ordinary community. It will be interesting to be in conversation with our Jewish sisters and brothers. Okoro raises many questions for us all. The March book ... Devotion by Dani Shapiro ... is another memoir that details a spiritual journey and seeking God through Jewish traditions and practice. The Okoro book is available at church.
