"Education is not a process of putting the learner under control but one of putting the learner in control of his or her own learning."

September 12th, 2011

Dear Parents,

A very warm welcome to our new 3's Club students and on behalf of the New York Kids Club I welcome your family  to our Early Enrichment learning community.

As we begin our semester I would like to introduce you to our 3's Club bi-weekly newsletter.  Parent communication is an integral part of our program and this e-newsletter is designed to give you the opportunity to engage your child in conversation about the many different activities and learning points presented throughout the semester.

The New York Kids Club 3's Club curriculum is  based on the philosophy that children learn through play - socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively.  Our curriculum  incorporates both teacher-directed and student-choice activities in a fun-filled environment.

Students in the 3's  Club will focus on four major learning areas:  Math, Literacy, Science, and Creative Arts including  role play, creative movement , visual arts and cooking.

The curriculum encompasses math concepts like quantitative reasoning (less/more), positioning (over/under), numeric recognition , counting, matching quantity with symbols, and basic addition and subtraction.   Literacy work will emphasize four major developmental areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Science units will focus on measuring, cause and effect, nature, light & energy, and the weather. The language curriculum includes phonemic awareness            (recognizing and writing letters), recognizing and reading names, storytelling and representational drawing in journals.

The 3's Club blends a traditional preschool learning approach with creative arts and a  gross motor development program including specialty classes in gymnastics and sports  as we aim to creating a well-rounded experience for every child.

Every two weeks our curriculum will center on a different literary theme.  Some examples include:
~ Nursery or classic stories
~ Circle Stories (a story that begins and ends at the same point)
~ Songs & Seasons
~ Poems with Problems
~ Fantastic Fables and Fairy Tales

For the next two weeks the students will be introduced to the classic  story The Little Red Hen.  In addition to new vocabulary such as "mill," "grain," and "thresh," the story explores social ideas such as hard work and friendship.  The children reenacted the story  and we begin introducing letters such as L, R, and H.

A few reminders before our first week of class:

1.) The 3's Club is an independent participation program. Please be prepared to say goodbye at the door on the first day of class. Adults are welcome to remain in the lobby area or leave the building after signing in.

2.) Please provide one full change of clothes in a large Ziploc bag with your child's name clearly labeled on it.

3.) Please refrain from sending any additional snack or water bottles with your child to class. We will accommodate any dietary restrictions your child may have and we ensure that each student has plenty of water throughout each class period.

4.) Please refrain from bringing toys to school as they create a distraction.

5.) Please be prompt for drop off and pick up. Consistency in this area will ease the transition into the class for your child. Be sure to sign in at the front desk at drop off time and sign out during pick up time.

I encourage you to speak with your child's instructors at any time for more information on daily activities as well as your students ongoing progress.

Please feel free to email me directly with any questions you may have.

Warm Regards,

Gair Signature
