Dear Parents,
This week we let the sun shine in on the New York Kids Club! Sunflowers decorate our classroom and students will create multimedia sunflowers of their own out of paper plates and a variety of yellow craft materials. They will practice using "pincher fingers" to pick up and manipulate the felt, crepe paper, construction paper, and magazine print petals to glue onto their sunflowers. Fine motor skills, including precise thumb, finger, hand, and wrist movements, are a focus of the art project this week as our students continue to develop the muscle memory and coordination of a thumb and forefinger pinch that will be integral to gripping pencils and pens for writing. Our gym coaches will reinforce the gymnastic poses that students have already been practicing, with a particular focus on the straddle this week. Practicing tuck (hug your knees to your chest), pike (legs together and straight in front of you), and straddle (legs in a "V" shape) at home with your student is a great exercise to develop flexibility and coordination together. Ask your child if he or she remembers our famous "Tuck, Pike, Straddle" song! The gym portion of our 2's Club curriculum immerses students in basic gymnastics instruction. This fall, the New York Kids Club will offer "Gym Juniors I" for students ages 2.5-3 years. The class is an excellent, natural continuation of the skills learned this summer as it will focus on basic body awareness, agility, strength, balance, and confidence. Instructors will teach apparatus skills (parallel and uneven bar, trampoline, and balance beam) as well as floor work (forward and backward rolls, beginning handstand, and cartwheel skills). For more information or to register for Gym Juniors, visit www.nykidsclub.com or speak with your Location Manager! Sincerely,
 Gair Morris Director |
