Dear Parents, What would summer be without the park, the beach, the backyard and PICNICS! This week students will go on an indoor picnic as we discuss food, table settings and counting, all to the tune of a favorite childrens song about frequent picnic visitors - ants!
During the music portion of our class teachers will lead the children in singing "The Ants Go Marching" using movements associated with words in the song. Interpreting music through movement is an important part of rhythmic development. Finger play is a great way to foster rhythm and makes singing fun for everyone!
In both the gym and the classroom students express their natural curiosity during child directed activities. In the classroom, students may choose between puzzles and other manipulatives which strengthen fine motor skills and introduce beginning math concepts and dramatic play emphasizing social and emotional development. In the gym, choices between a myriad of gross motor challenges include practicing balls skills, team games, trampoline and strength building activities. Our curriculum balances child and teacher directed activities in art, music, creative movement, literacy and science. We encourage you to discuss the activities that your child chose to partake in this week!
"Did you choose to play a sport with your coach or did you choose to jump on the trampoline?"
The New York Kids Club encourages independence through empowering children to make their own decisions and draw their own conclusions. We often give children two choices; to be watchfully engaged or actively participating in a particular activity. The level of engagement will vary from activity to activity, child to child and day to day. This very concept is what makes learning so exciting!
Please feel free to speak with your child's instructors at the end of class regarding the choice's your child made in class this week.
Now that summer is here I hope you and your family have the chance for a picnic soon. I love New York in the summer - How about you? Sincerely,
 Gair Morris Director |
